The Delhi Police has contended before the high court that a trial court's order discharging 11 people, including student activists Sharjeel Imam and Asif Iqbal Tanha, in the 2019 Jamia Nagar violence case, is patently illegal and perverse. In a petition, the police has said the trial court's order is in the teeth of well-settled principles of law, suffers from grave infirmities that go to the root of the matter and is perverse in the eyes of law. The plea is scheduled to come up for hearing on Monday. Officials of Uttar Pradesh Police on Thursday arrested a school staff member, accused of forcefully tonsuring the head of a student who allegedly came up with a cropped-hair style in the school. The incident took place in a school located near Kurki Bazar in the Sammanpur police station area in Uttar Pradesh's Ambedkar Nagar. According to officials, the student came with a cropped hairstyle to the school, to which the staff member apparently lost his cool and ended up tonsuring the head of the student. After the incident, the boy returned to his home with a bald head and narrated the ordeal to his father, who filed a complaint to the police against the staff member. In response to the episode, the police arrested the accused and charged him with sections 504, and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Police's investigation into this matter is underway. A 34-year-old woman from Nepal allegedly died by suicide in a lodge in south Mumbai, police said on Wednesday. The incident came to light on Tuesday night when the lodge staff found the door of her room locked from the inside and their calls failed to get any response, an official said. A police team rushed to the spot and opened the door with the help of a carpenter to find the woman dead. The dead has been identified with the help of her documents, the official said, adding they have registered a case of accidental death and investigating. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday seized Rs 1 crore in cash and detained a businessman following searches at his office and residence in Kolkata's Ballygunge area in connection with their investigation into the coal scam, a senior officer said. A three-member team of the ED searched different locations in Kolkata in connection with the case, he said. "So far, Rs 1 crore in cash has been counted. The counting is still on and it may increase. The cash was kept hidden in different bags at the businessman's office and residence," the ED officer said. "We have detained the businessman as he could not give appropriate answers on why he was keeping such a large amount at home. The investigation is underway," he added. The team of the ED had reached Kolkata on Tuesday night, the officer said. India received foreign inward remittances of USD 89,127 million in 2021-22, which was the highest ever received in a single year, Union minister of state for finance Pankaj Chaudhary informed Parliament on Tuesday. Pankaj Chaudhary stated this in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha. In 2017-18, the remittances were at USD 69,129 million, and have been rising since, the minister said, quoting RBI data. The Minister, however, stated that country-wise data on remittance are not compiled. However, the minister shared the data of major countries in inward remittances to India. The US, UAE, the UK, Singapore, and Saudi Arabia are the top five major countries from where India receives such payments. The Madhya Pradesh government on Tuesday decided to amend the rules so that like sons, married daughters of deceased government employees have an equal right to get a job on compassionate grounds. The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Bhopal. "The cabinet has decided that like sons, married daughters also have equal right to get appointment on compassionate grounds," said Medical Education Minister Vishvas Sarang, speaking to the media. The General Administration Department was directed to carry out necessary amendment to the rules, he added. Earlier this year, the MP High Court's Indore bench had directed the government to give a job to the married daughter of a deceased employee. A 28-year-old tribal woman was gangraped allegedly by three persons in Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, a police official said on Monday. As per the woman's complaint, she was looking for a job and a man offered her one at a stone crushing unit in Bilaua area, Additional Superintendent of Police Jairaj Kuber said. "She said this man and two of his associates took her to an isolated place on February 4 and raped her. They let her go after threatening her. She filed a complaint the next day after reaching home," he said. Two persons have been arrested while efforts are on to arrest the third, he added. Amid protests in Sikkim over a reported observation of the Supreme Court referring to Sikkimese Nepalis as "immigrants", Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Sunday said the Centre is filing a review petition in the supreme court to support the state government. The state government has already filed a review petition in the supreme court on the matter. The protests are taking place after the Supreme Court reportedly mentioned the Sikkimese Nepali community as immigrants in an observation on January 13 while extending income tax exemption to all old settlers of the state. Telangana Chief Minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) president K Chandrasekhar Rao on Sunday asked why "wars" between states over water were being encouraged when there was adequate availability of it to irrigate every acre of land in India. Speaking at a media briefing here, he said the BRS aims to change water policy and bring in a new mechanism for water supply in the country. "Why are water wars between states being encouraged when there is adequate water to irrigate every acre of land in India?" he asked. Average goods train speed in India is 24 kmph, way behind 120 kmph in China, he said.
