The police have registered a case against three persons after a picture showing a man wearing a garland of shoes surfaced in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district, an official said on Saturday. The incident took place on June 22 at village Gangtira under Sohagi police station limits, some 65 km from the district headquarters, he said. The man, later identified as Indrajeet Majhi, was beaten and forced to wear a garland of footwear after being accused of theft, the official said. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Anil Sonkar said that following a complaint by Majhi, a case was registered on July 6 against accused Deshpal Singh, his son and nephew under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections, including 294 (obscene acts), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 355 (assault with intent to dishonour a person), and 504 (provoking breach of the peace). Amid incidents of violence during voting for the Panchayat election across West Bengal, a miscreant ran away with the ballot box from the polling station in Malda's Mahadipur area. Meanwhile, voting was suspended at Indreshwar primary school in Dinhata, West Bengal's Cooch Behar, after water was thrown into the ballot box. In another incident, a ballot box at a polling booth in Baranachina of Dinhata in Cooch Behar district was set on fire allegedly by voters who were angry with bogus voting that was reportedly going on there. Another incident was reported from Balutola in Gopalpur Panchayat of Malda where a clash broke out between Congress and TMC workers and bombs were hurled. The government has called the customary all-party meeting on July 19 ahead of Parliament's Monsoon session, official sources said on Thursday. The session, which begins from July 20, is set to be stormy with the opposition expected to target the government over a host of issues, including the ethnic clashes in Manipur and the recent train accident in Odisha. The government calls an all-party meeting usually on the eve of every session's beginning. The BJP and the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by it is also expected to meet before the session to finalise its strategy to take on the opposition and score political points ahead of some crucial state assembly polls. The NHRC on Tuesday issued a notice to the Rajasthan government over rats allegedly found gnawing the feet of patients in a government-run hospital in Jodhpur. Reportedly, the number of rats has increased so much that in ward C of its psychiatry department, they have bitten four patients, the National Human Rights Commission said in a statement. The NHRC has taken "suo motu cognisance of a media report that rats are gnawing on the feet of patients in government-run Mathura Das Mathur Hospital (MDMH) in Jodhpur", it said. The commission has observed that the content of the media report, if true, indicates the violation of the right to health and medical care of the patients which is a matter of concern for it. Accordingly, it has issued notice to the chief secretary, the government of Rajasthan, seeking a detailed report in four weeks, including steps being taken or proposed to be taken to address the grievance of the patients at the MDMH, Jodhpur, the statement said. A woman medical student was found dead in the hostel of a medical college in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. It is suspected that she committed suicide by hanging, according to the Police. "The deceased was identified as Chaitanya, 23, a resident of Palasa of Srikakulam district. Chaitanya, who was married two months back, was working as a house surgeon at Narayana Medical College in Nellore. A case has been registered for unnatural death and an investigation has been started," said the police. Chaitanya was found hanging in the college hostel room on Sunday morning by hostel mates who immediately informed the incident to the authorities. Police sources said that in their preliminary investigation, it is found that there were quarrels between Chaitanya and her husband.
