Eight Congress turncoats who joined the BJP and helped it form the government in 2019, lost in the May 10 Karnataka Assembly elections, for which the results were announced on Saturday. As many as 13 Congress and three JD(S) MLAs had resigned from the Karnataka Assembly in 2019 thus bringing down the 14-month-old coalition government of the Congress and the JD(S) led by H D Kumaraswamy. JD(S) second-in-command and two-time chief minister HD Kumaraswamy won the Channapatna seat in Karnataka's Ramanagara district for the sixth time on Saturday. HD Kumaraswamy received 96,592 votes against 80,677 polled by his BJP rival CP Yogeshwar. Congress candidate Gangadhar S finished third with 15,374 votes, according to the Election Commission website. Mr Kumaraswamy had also contested elections from Channapatna, known for wooden toys, instead of Ramanagara in 2018 against local strongman Yogeshwara. The JD(S) leader won by a margin of 21,530 votes. Mr Yogeshwara has represented the constituency five times since 1999 as an Independent, and as a candidate of Congress, BJP and Samajwadi Party. The Supreme Court Friday said the process of designating 'senior advocate', which has always been held as an "honour conferred", should be carried out at least once a year. A bench headed by Justice S K Kaul, while fine-tuning the guidelines for the supreme court and high courts for designating lawyers as senior advocates which were laid down by the top court in a 2017 verdict, said voting by secret ballot by the full court should not be the rule but an exception. It said in case it has to be resorted to, the reasons for the same should be recorded. Rajasthan minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas on Friday spoke out against the remarks by fellow Congress leader Shanti Kumar Dhariwal on dissident leader Sachin Pilot, saying one should "refrain" from making such comments. In an apparent attack on former deputy chief minister Pilot on Thursday, Dhariwal said, " Ashok Gehlot ne acche accho ko paani pilaaya hai (He has dealt with several big leaders)." The Kerala High Court on Friday issued directions to the government to ensure that the boats operating in the State are not overloaded and display prominently the maximum carrying capacity on each vessel. The court was hearing a suo motu PIL over the tragic boat accident that happened at Tanur on May 7 that claimed 22 lives, including 15 children. The bench, comprising Justices Devan Ramachandran and Sophy Thomas, noted that overloading was one of the major factors causing a boat accident. "...Therefore there is no doubt in our minds that the fundamental imperative is to ensure that every boat in Kerala is allowed to ferry or carry persons only to the maximum capacity as certified by the competent authority," the court said. A 31-year-old man allegedly stabbed his mother to death and seriously wounded his father in Maharashtra's Thane city on Thursday, police said. A manhunt has been launched for the accused, said senior inspector Rajesh Babshetty of Kasarwadavali police station. The deceased was identified as Vinita Bhatkar, 66, who lived with her husband in the Kopri area. As per preliminary information, the accused attacked his parents with a kitchen knife around 12 noon following a quarrel. Centre has told the Delhi High Court it is considering introducing provisions for recruitment of females to the post of Constable/ Driver and Constable/Driver-cum-Pump Operator (Driver for Fire Services) in CISF at par with males. The Kerala government on Wednesday announced relaxations in working hours for its employees who have children suffering from autistic disorders, cerebral palsy, multiple disabilities, and mental retardation. One of the government employees who is a parent of children with 40 per cent or more such disabilities will be given relaxation in working hours, the government said in a statement here. A maximum of 16 hours of total working hours in a month will be allowed to one of such employees, it said. This is in addition to the concessions currently granted to government staff. The Kerala High Court on Wednesday slammed the state government and the police for their inability to protect a 23-year-old doctor who was killed at a taluk hospital in Kottarakkara area of Kollam district by a man she was treating, saying it was a "complete breakdown of the protectional system". A special bench of Justices Devan Ramachandran and Kauser Edappagath directed that the CCTV footage of the rooms or places in the taluk hospital where the incident took place be preserved. It made the superintendent of the hospital personally responsible for the task. The court also directed the First Class Judicial Magistrate of Kottarakkara to visit the hospital and carry out a physical inspection of the crime scene and submit a report by Thursday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the country's health service is undergoing a "rapid transformation", asserting that in the last nine years the poor have realized that medical facilities are easily accessible to them. A court in West Bengal's Birbhum district on Wednesday fixed May 30 as the next date of hearing on Visva-Bharati's notice to Nobel laureate Amartya Sen asking him to vacate 0.13 acre (5,500 square feet) of land which the central university claims he is illegally occupying. Visva-Bharati had sent the eviction notice to the economist on April 19, asking him to vacate 0.13 acre of the total 1.38 acres of land of his ancestral residence 'Pratichi' in the university's Santiniketan campus within May 6. The Calcutta High Court has put an interim stay on that order and asked the Birbhum district judge to hear the matter on at 2 pm on May 10. A 46-year-old man was allegedly burned alive by his son in Churu district's Sardarshahar area, police said on Monday. Sardarshahar Deputy Superintendent of Police Narendra Sharma said Sonu Meghwal, 22, set his father Liluram Meghwal on fire by pouring kerosene on him during a fight Sunday night. Liluram died on the spot. Sonu was charged for murder at the complaint of his brother and arrested, police said. Sharma said the victim's body was handed over to his family members after post mortem on Monday. Preliminary investigation revealed that both, father and son, were addicted to alcohol and fought frequently. Late Sunday night, Liluram hit Sonu during one such fight, and when the matter escalated, Sonu threw kerosene on him and set him on fire, police said. Rajasthan Police has booked Manikanta Rathod, a BJP candidate in upcoming Karnataka assembly poll, and local BJP MLA Madan Dilawar with charges of murder and criminal intimidation for their remarks against Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, a senior officer said on Monday. The FIR has been filed at Sanjay Circle Police Station at the complaint of Congress state secretary Ram Singh Kaswan. According to Kotwali ACP Narendra Kumar, an FIR has been registered against BJP Ramganj Mandi MLA Madan Dilawar and Manikanta Rathod, a BJP contender in the upcoming Karnataka assembly election. "As one of the accused, Madan Dilawar, is a sitting MLA, the matter will be investigated by the CB-CID," said Kumar, who is also the investigating officer in the case. The Election Commission on Monday asked the Karnataka BJP to provide "verifiable and traceable" facts by Tuesday evening regarding its newspaper advertisement describing the Congress as "the most corrupt party in the world". Earlier, on a complaint by the BJP, the poll panel had issued a similar notice to the Congress over its "corruption rate card" advertisement.
