3-Year-Old Boy Dies After Falling Into Canal At Cochin Airport

A three-year-old boy from Rajasthan died after falling into a garbage pit at a cafeteria near the domestic terminal of Cochin airport on Friday.

The boy, identified as Rithan Jaju, son of Sourabh, was playing in the garden outside Anna Cafe near the airport when he fell into the four-foot deep pit that had been left open for cleaning work.

Rithan's family, part of a group that had come on a tour of Kerala, stopped at the cafeteria for lunch.

According to the police, the incident occurred at around 12:50 pm while they were dining inside.

After Rithan was nowhere to be seen, his parents searched the area for him and later informed Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) authorities after failing to locate him.

During the search, Rithan's father spotted his shoes near the garbage pit which led him to his discovery.

Upon being pulled up from the pit, the boy was unconscious and vomited garbage. The authorities immediately administered CPR before rushing him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.

The police have launched an investigation into the accident and the child's body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

The CIAL has not yet responded to the incident.

Rajnath Singh Holds Call With US Counterpart Pete Hegseth To Boost Ties

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his American counterpart, Pete Hegseth, agreed on Thursday to work on a 10-year comprehensive framework to bolster the India-US defence partnership, especially in the spheres of intelligence, logistics, operational and industrial engagement.

Rajnath Singh said Hegseth reviewed various aspects of the bilateral defence ties in a phone conversation that came less than a week before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's planned trip to Washington.

It was Mr Singh's first phone conversation with Hegseth after the latter was confirmed as the US defence secretary on January 25.

An Indian readout of the conversation said India and the United States have agreed to work together to draft a comprehensive framework on defence cooperation, aimed at structuring the bilateral collaboration for the 2025-2035 period.

It said Mr Singh and Hegseth reviewed the extensive India-US defence cooperation activities, covering "multiple domains in land, air, maritime and space".

In a post on X, the defence minister said he and Hegseth reviewed the ongoing India-US defence cooperation and explored ways to further deepen the relationship.

Mr Singh described the phone conversation as "excellent".

"We reviewed the ongoing defence cooperation and explored ways and means to expand and deepen the India-US bilateral defence relationship," he said.

"We also agreed to chart out an ambitious agenda which includes operational, intelligence, logistics and defence-industrial cooperation," he added.

"Looking forward to work closely with Secretary Hegseth," Mr Singh said.

Modi and US President Donald Trump, during a phone conversation on January 27, vowed to work towards a "trusted" partnership, with a focus on boosting the India-US cooperation in the areas of trade, energy and defence.

Following the phone talks, the White House said Trump has emphasised the importance of India increasing its procurement of US-made security equipment and moving towards a fair bilateral trade relationship.

In the readout, the defence ministry said Mr Singh and Hegseth appreciated the ongoing and "remarkable expansion" of the India-US defence partnership, and reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the ties.

"In particular, the two ministers decided to work together on technology cooperation, integration of defence industrial supply chains, enhanced interoperability, logistics and information sharing and joint military exercises," it said.

"They also agreed to provide enhanced support to the growing defence innovation collaboration between the governments, start-ups, businesses and academic institutions," it said.

The phone conversation between Mr Singh and Hegseth came amid some anguish in India over the US deporting more than 100 Indians in a military transport aircraft.

How to boost the defence bilateral ties is expected to be one of the key focus areas of the talks between Modi and Trump in Washington DC.

According to the plan, Modi will travel to Washington DC after concluding his two-day visit to Paris.

The prime minister is expected to land in the American capital in the evening of February 12 and he and Trump are expected to hold the talks the next day.

It would be the prime minister's first bilateral visit to the US after Trump assumed the presidency for a second term on January 20, following his stunning electoral victory in November last year.

Man 'Mistaken To Be Wild Animal' Shot Dead By Hunting Expedition Group

A hunting expedition by a group of villagers went fatally wrong as one of them was shot dead by some other members, who allegedly mistook him for a wild boar in a forest area in Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said on Wednesday.

One person was injured in the incident that took place in the night of January 28, they said, adding that at least six men have been detained in this connection.

Palghar's Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Abhijit Dharashivkar said the group of villagers had ventured into Borsheti forest area at Manor in the district for hunting of wild boars.

"During the expedition, some villagers got separated from the group. After some time, one of the hunters mistook them for wild boars and opened fire, hitting two villagers. One of them died on the spot, while the other sustained serious injuries," he said.

Shocked and panicked by the accidental killing, the group dragged the deceased person's body into the bushes and hid it instead of reporting about the incident to the police, he said.

"After receiving a tip-off, the police conducted a probe and detained six villagers suspected to be involved in the crime. After an extensive search on Wednesday, the authorities recovered the highly decomposed body of the victim and sent it for a postmortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of the death," Dharashivkar said.

There are reports that the injured villager also succumbed to his wounds during treatment and his body has been cremated by the villagers without informing the authorities. However, the police are trying to ascertain it and conducting investigation into it, he said, adding that an FIR is being registered against the accused.

2 Fetuses Successfully Removed From Newborn's Abdomen In Maharashtra

Days after a woman was detected with 'fetus in fetu', an extremely rare condition, two fetuses were removed successfully post-delivery from her three-day-old child's abdomen in Amravati district of Maharashtra on Tuesday, doctors said.

The 32-year-old woman from Buldhana district was detected with the rare congenital anomaly, in which a malformed fetus is located within the body of another fetus, last month when she underwent sonography as part of regular health check-up.

The woman delivered a baby boy on February 1 at Buldhana Women's Hospital. Subsequently, she and the child were shifted to a super specialty government hospital in Amravati district where a team of doctors operated upon the newborn to remove two fetuses from his stomach, they said.

The boy was operated under the supervision of Dr Usha Gajbhiye at Amravati Divisional Hospital.

Talking to reporters, Dr Gajbhiye said there were two twins like fetuses with hands and legs in the stomach of the three-day-old child.

The fetuses were removed successfully during the operation and the baby and mother were doing well, she said.

Obstetrician and gynaecologist at the Buldhana hospital, Dr Prasad Agarwal, who conducted sonography on the woman when she was 35-week pregnant, told reporters last Tuesday that 'fetus in fetu' is one of the rarest medical conditions, occurring one in five lakh cases.

Only about 200 such cases have been reported (across the world) till now, that, too, after delivery, including 10-15 cases in India, he had said.

"But I was lucky and vigilant enough to notice something very unusual with this baby, grossly normal growing fetus with a few bones and a fetus-like structure in its abdomen," Dr Agarwal said.

"It struck me immediately that this is not normal. It was 'fetus in fetu', one of the rarest cases in the world. We asked for a second opinion and the case was confirmed by radiologist Dr Shruti Thorat," he had said.

Rajasthan Law Minister Uses Cuss Word In Assembly, Apologises After Uproar

The Rajasthan Assembly erupted in chaos on Monday when Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel used "unparliamentary" language in the House.

Mr Patel made the remarks during the Question Hour, which became a bone of contention when the house resumed after lunch for debate on the Governor's address.

The matter settled when Mr Patel apologised saying he did not mean to use the word.

The incident occurred during a discussion, when Minister Otaram Dewasi was replying to the question raised by Congress MLA Chetan Patel related to crop damage due to floods.

Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully expressed his displeasure over the minister's answer and asked counter questions, leading to an uproar.

And when Mr Jully asked the minister to give the figures of damage in Sangod of Kota, Mr Patel stood up and used an abusive word.

As soon as the House resumed after lunch, Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra said, "The House was in session. When the Leader of Opposition was speaking, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister objected to the Leader of Opposition. He did not only objected, but also abused. There can be nothing more unfortunate than this." He added, "What can be more shameful that the Parliamentary Affairs Minister abusing? We come here for the issues of the common people, we do not come here to be abused."

Mr Patel responded by saying he and his party always respected and honoured the members.

"We present our point effectively, we do not lack in this. There was no intention to hurt anyone's dignity," he said.

"I never had the intention to speak unparliamentary words in the House nor will I have in the future. If someone gets excited while speaking in the flow, there was no such intention. Therefore, it should be deleted and such feelings will never be there towards any member in future. I feel sorry for this," he added.

Mr Dotasra reacted saying, "If it came in the record, then an apology should be made. Our Dhariwal ji had apologised, I had apologised on his behalf, you are the Law Minister."

Mr Patel said, "I have not said this and if I have said it, then I feel sorry. We do not remain adamant like you. We respect everyone."

Later, Speaker Vasudev Devnani directed the members to maintain decorum of the House.

"If something goes wrong, we should immediately take action against it. If something happens then I think there is no harm in apologising," he said.

The House proceeded for debate on the Governor's address and adjourned till Wednesday.

"Apologise, Mr Rahul Gandhi": Devendra Fadnavis Trashes Poll Fraud Charge

Introspect, apologise was the message from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to Rahul Gandhi, just hours after the Congress leader alleged new voters were added mostly in constituencies where the BJP won in the Maharashtra election.

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Monday alleged that about 70 lakh voters, equivalent to Himachal Pradesh's population, were added to the electoral rolls in Maharashtra between the Lok Sabha and state elections.

"Introspect instead of insulting Maharashtra! You have insulted the people of Maharashtra, the land of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Mahatma Phule and Veer Savarkar. You have questioned the democratic mandate given by the people of Maharashtra to the NDA just because your party was vanquished," hit back Mr Fadnavis, whose BJP, with 132 seats, recorded its best-ever performance in the state, while the Congress managed to win just 16 seats in the November polls.

"Instead of introspection, you are indulging in slander. The people of Maharashtra won't forgive you for this. Apologise Mr. Rahul Gandhi!" Mr Fadnavis added.

Speaking on the Motion of Thanks on the President's address in the Lok Sabha, Mr Gandhi alleged that about 70 lakh voters, equivalent to Himachal Pradesh's population, were added to the electoral rolls in Maharashtra between the Lok Sabha and state elections.

"Now, I want to bring to the notice of this House some data about Maharashtra polls. Between the Lok Sabha polls, which the INDIA bloc won, and the assembly elections, the number equivalent to the population of Himachal was added to the voting rolls of Maharashtra," Mr Gandhi told the House, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance.

"More voters were added in Maharashtra in five months between the Lok Sabha and assembly polls than in five years," the former Congress president said.

Mr Gandhi had last month alleged that there is a "serious problem" with the country's election system and that the Election Commission needs to ensure there is transparency in polls.

Maintaining that "something wrong" has taken place in the Maharashtra assembly elections, he had said the Congress and the Opposition have been asking for voter lists of Maharashtra and Haryana elections, which the poll body is refusing to provide.

Indian-Origin Man In UK Fires Blank Shots, Impersonates Cop, Jailed

An Indian-origin man who wore a fake police uniform and fired blanks at armed officers while brandishing an imitation gun near Leicester, eastern England, has been sentenced to three years' imprisonment.

Hari Mann, 25, pointed a handgun at a member of the public before firing the blanks at police officers in Braunstone Town on the morning of June 4, 2024.

Leicestershire Police officers' fast-paced response was praised in court as Mann was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court on Friday.

"This was an incident that resulted in a fast-paced policing response and had a significant impact on the local community," said Detective Inspector (DI) Hazel Sandall.

"The first report to our control room was made at 9.57 am and Mann was arrested at 10.15 am. Thanks to the quick reactions of our call handlers and firearms officers, he was detained before he was able to cause physical harm to anyone. It is enormous credit to officers and staff involved in this response that they were able to bring the incident to a swift and safe conclusion," he said.

The court heard that Mann had driven a Mercedes Sprinter van into a pub car park and began to empty its contents. After being confronted by a member of the public, Mann then pointed a handgun at him. This led to police being called and armed officers were deployed.

"The items uncovered by officers as the investigation progressed were deeply concerning. While his weapon contained blank rounds, the fact he was still prepared to pull the trigger at armed officers makes me truly believe he wanted to cause fear of serious harm to the public and police," said DI Sandall.

"This is not something which we will tolerate and, as our officers and staff showed, we will take immediate action to ensure our communities remain protected and safe," he added.

When the firearms officers arrived at the scene, they were confronted by Mann, who fired shots at them. One of the armed officers immediately recognised that an imitation weapon was being used and that blanks were being fired, which meant he was quickly able to diffuse the situation.

"A Taser was deployed and despite Mann trying to run away, he was swiftly detained, taken to the ground and arrested. While in custody, Mann also assaulted a nurse," Leicestershire Police said in a statement.

Due to concerns regarding the contents of the van, a cordon was put in place and several nearby properties were evacuated as a precaution.

As part of the ongoing investigation, officers also searched an address in Lancaster Place in Leicester that was linked to Mann and found another firearm, a police-style uniform and handcuffs. Some parts of the uniform were found to have been bought from an online auction site. Two cars - a Ford Mustang and Ford C-Max - that were also linked to Mann were located and found to contain sirens and blue light equipment.

Mann was subsequently charged by police and pleaded guilty on October 9 last year at Leicester Crown Court to: six counts of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence; one count of modifying an imitation firearm; one count of impersonating a police officer; and one count of assault of an emergency worker.

Manipur Kuki Leader Faces Action After Mob Stops Forces From Destroying Poppy

The chief of a key Kuki body in Manipur faces legal action after a mob attacked a small team of security forces when they tried to destroy illegal opium poppy fields in Manipur's Kangpokpi district on January 31.

The Manipur government in a statement said a team of the state police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) went to destroy illegal poppy plantations in the hill range of Kangpokpi district's Lhungjang village, 40 km from the state capital Imphal, when they were confronted by a large mob armed with sticks.

Lhungjang is the native village of Ajang Khongsai, the chief of Kuki Inpi, the government said.

"An FIR [first information report] has been filed at Saikul police station for further investigation into the incident. The government takes the incident very seriously and condemns the mob violence in the strongest terms. Strict legal action will be taken up against all those involved, including Ajang Khongsai, who is linked to both the village and the incident..." it said in the statement.

The Kuki Inpi is an organisation that has endorsed the demand by Kuki leaders and militants under the suspension of operations (SoO) agreement for a separate administration carved out of Manipur.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

"The operation targeted a large tract of land used for poppy cultivation, which has been identified as a key source for the production of illicit opium. Despite the clear intentions of the authorities to enforce the law and tackle the drug menace in the region, the drive was met with violent opposition," the government said in the statement.

"A large mob armed with sticks gathered at the site, forcibly halting the operation. Taking advantage of the limited number of police personnel, the mob vandalised three police vehicles and threatened the personnel to stop the destruction drive. The situation quickly escalated, and a reinforcement team led by the SP [Superintendent of Police] Kangpokpi rushed to the spot to control the mob and restore order and ensure the continuation of the destruction drive," the government said.

The Kangpokpi SP, Manoj Prabhakar, is an Indian Police Service officer who suffered a gash on his forehead during a protest by members of the Kuki tribes on January 3, days after protesters tried to stop security forces from dismantling bunkers on the hills. Many women from the Kuki tribes were injured in clashes with the security forces on December 31 on the hilltops, when the forces went to remove the bunkers. One woman lost an eye.

The Manipur government said the combined team eventually managed to destroy 45 acres of illegal poppy cultivation.

On Sunday, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh in a post on X said over 25 acres of poppy cultivation have been destroyed in Tengnoupal district.

"I commend the coordinated efforts of Tengnoupal district police, BSF, AR, reserve line teams, forest department, and the executive magistrate in tackling these illicit activities," Mr Singh said.

Earlier, Mr Singh reached out to his counterpart in neighbouring Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a show of support to the Assam Police for destroying illegal opium poppy cultivation worth over Rs 27 crore. The police in Assam's Goalpara destroyed 170 bighas (over 56 acres) of poppy plantation in January, Mr Sarma said in a post on X on Sunday.

Manipur has been experiencing ethnic violence between the valley-dominant Meitei community and over a dozen distinct tribes collectively known as Kuki, who are dominant in some hill areas of the state. Both communities have been fighting since May 2023 over a range of issues such as land rights and political representation.

The Kuki tribes have alleged the Biren Singh government targeted poor farmers in the hills who have no other sources of income and ignored the role of drug lords living in Meitei-dominated valley areas.

The Manipur government has refuted the allegations and shared data to assert no community was singled out in the state's 'war on drugs' campaign.

Lakshmi, Said To Be Last Maoist In Karnataka, Surrenders In Udupi

Lakshmi, said to be the last Maoist in Karnataka, unconditionally surrendered on Sunday in front of Udupi Deputy Commissioner Vidya Kumari and Superintendent of Police Arun K.

According to police, Lakshmi, who had been hiding in Andhra Pradesh, has had three cases at Amasebail and Shankaranarayana police stations in Kundapur Taluk in the Udupi district. These cases date back to 2007-2008, and they pertain to the exchange of fire with police, assault, and pushing Maoist literature in villages and small towns.

Police said Lakshmi originally belonged to Thombattu of Machchattu village in Kundapura taluk.

She was accompanied by the State Naxal Surrender Committee member Sripal and her husband Salim, a former Maoist who had surrendered in 2020 in Andhra Pradesh.

After severing her connection with her family 15 years ago, Lakshmi had gone underground and was active in pushing the Maoist agenda in Chikkamagaluru and Udupi districts.

"I tried to get in touch with the district officials and wanted to surrender after the Karnataka government had announced the surrender protocol and package, but it had not happened for some reason. Now that the surrender committee was formed, my surrender has been facilitated," Lakshmi told journalists after her surrender today.

She thanked Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for the generous surrender package and appealed to the district administration to relieve her of all charges laid against her in the police stations in Amasebail and Shankaranarayana in Kundapur taluk.

DC Vidya Kumari said Lakshmi comes under the 'A' category candidate for surrender, and as a surrender package norm the Maoists coming under this category are entitled to get Rs 7 lakh.

The 'A' category has been denominated for the Naxals originating from Karnataka state, Kumari added.

"The surrender packages will be given in phases extending to three years, and in addition, depending on the core capacity of the Naxals who surrendered, facilities like education, rehabilitation, and employment will be offered," added the DC.

Sripal of the State Surrender Committee, told the journalists present that the committee had recommended to the government to expeditiously dispose of the cases filed against the surrendered Maoists, helping them to lead a normal life in society. "Due to the efforts of the Committee, 22 Naxal activists have surrendered in 2025 so far and Lakshimi happens to be the last one in the state to surrender. Karnataka is now a 'Naxal-free' state," he said.

Incidentally, after the surrender of Kotehanda Ravindra in Chikkamagaluru on Saturday, the Chief Minister Office had issued a press release stating that Karnataka is a Naxal-free state. It also said CM Siddaramaiah has announced the Chief Minister's Medal for the team of 22 police officers and men who put in efforts to make Karnataka a Naxal-free state.

Meanwhile, Sripal said Naxals belonging to Karnataka and Kerala must be facilitated to face the trial in one unified court either in Shivamogga, Udupi, or Chikkamagaluru or even at the NIA court in Bengaluru. They must also be extended defence counsels, he added.
