Uma Bharti To "Stay In Temple" Over Madhya Pradesh's New Liquor Policy

BJP leader Uma Bharti has once again hit the headlines for her move against liquor sale in Madhya Pradesh.

Ms Bharti on Saturday said, "New liquor policy will be introduced on January 31 in the state, till then I will remain in the shelter of God."

Ahead of the introduction of the new liquor policy, Ms Bharti will stay at Panchmukhi Hanuman and Durga temple located in Ayodhya Nagar locality in the state capital Bhopal for the next three days demanding the policy be made more stringent.

Notably, a liquor shop is situated in front of the above-mentioned temple in the city. Ms Bharti said, "The one to be destroyed is in front (liquor shop), the one from whom to gain power is behind (temple). I have come here because I had a lot of trouble. There is a temple of Goddess Durga and Lord Hanuman but in front of it just 50 metres away there is a liquor shop and bar."

"On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti when it was time of Navratri on October 2, 2022, a group of a few women had taken out a march against liquor sale. During this, the state government had made the announcement that they would consult on liquor policy and also said about revenue that would not consider it as a huge basis for recovery. The government also said that they had understood the problem of women and also would try to find a way for taverns," she said.

"I have full faith in CM Chouhan, but there is fear that those whom the government consulted may not have created any trouble. Now, I will hear on January 31, what decision has the government taken in the New Liquor Policy," She added.

"I believe that if the controlled liquor distribution system is implemented at my behest, then as many women will cast a vote that the record of 2003 will be repeated in Madhya Pradesh. Because everything gets washed away in alcohol as even Ladli Laxmiya is not safe to walk on the road and even residential people do not live happily. All the plans get destroyed and washed away in the flow of liquor. Therefore a healthy society has to be built and Madhya Pradesh will become the model state in the controlled liquor distribution system," Ms Bharti added.

UN General Assembly President's 3-Day India Visit Begins Tomorrow

President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Csaba Korosi will arrive in India on a three-day visit on Sunday, during which he is expected to discuss with his Indian interlocutors ways to deal with various challenges facing the globe.

It will be Csaba Korosi's first bilateral visit to any country since he assumed the UNGA presidency in September 2022, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, announcing his trip.

Csaba Korosi is scheduled to witness the "Beating the Retreat" ceremony at the historic Vijay Chowk in the heart of New Delhi.

The president of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly (PGA) will hold talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on key multilateral and regional issues of mutual interest.

"The PGA's visit to India will be an opportunity to exchange views on global challenges that the United Nations is currently seized with," the MEA said in a statement.

"It would help reinforce India's abiding commitment to multilateralism, including through its ongoing G20 Presidency, and how it would address these global challenges meaningfully for a better future for the Global South," it added.

Csaba Korosi has already outlined five priorities for his UNGA presidency, which include standing firm on basic principles of the UN charter, making significant and measurable progress in sustainability transformation, enhancing the role of science in decision making and increasing solidarity to better endure new chapters of crises facing the world.

"Given the PGA's strong interest in India's expertise in water management and experience in SDGs (sustainable development goals), he would also be interacting with senior officials of NITI Aayog and India's G20 Presidency team to explore the scaling up of India's best practices," the MEA said.

On January 30, Csaba Korosi will deliver a public address at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) on his presidency theme of "Solutions through Solidarity, Sustainability and Science in the UN".

The UNGA president will travel to Bengaluru on January 31, where his engagements include an interaction with scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and a field visit to an IISc-led water conservation project.

Csaba Korosi is also expected to visit development projects in and around Bengaluru and interact with the UN-India country team, the MEA said.

The governor of Karnataka would be hosting a dinner in his honour, it added.

This Padma Shri Awardee Is Wood Art Trainer, 'Counsellor' For Jail Inmates

Ajay Kumar Mandavi, one of the three persons chosen from Chhattisgarh for the Padma Shri awards this year, has for more than a decade been teaching Kanker jail inmates, several of them arrested in cases related to the outlawed Maoist movement, wooden calligraphy art.

Speaking about the honour, the 55-year-old on Friday said he becomes more of a counsellor than a wood art trainer when he enters the jail premises as many inmates recount their pain and problems to him even without being prodded about their past.

Mr Mandavi, who hails from Kanker district, said making toys out of wood and clay was a childhood interest, which turned him into an artist later in life, resulting in him training youth, several of them victims of Naxalite violence, from 2005.

He was asked by the then collector of Kanker to teach wood art to jail inmates in 2010, when the Maoist menace was at its peak in the district.

He began his classes with a dozen inmates, all of them held for alleged Maoist links, a journey that has been instrumental in motivating many of them to understand the futility of violence and the need to live fulfilling, peaceful lives.

"I never asked them (jail inmates) about their past. However, they often share their pain and problems with me and I listen to them patiently. Gradually my role became that of a counsellor than just an art trainer. I too started enjoying counselling them," Mr Mandavi said.

"One of the inmates, who was subjected to rigorous interrogation post arrest in a Naxalite-related case, once said he wanted to observe the nine-day Navratri fast but wanted me to suggest some wish he could seek from the goddess," he said.

On being told he should forgive all the security personnel involved in his custodial interrogation, the inmate readily agreed, resulting in him admitting to being relaxed and stress free at the end of the nine-day fast, Mr Mandavi claimed.

"He told me he has forgiven all those who interrogated him. So far, I have taught around 400 inmates of Kanker jail, of which 250 were arrested for Naxalite-related incidents. Nearly all of them have walked out of jail after completing prison terms, while some have been released on bail," Mr Mandavi, fondly called 'Guruji' by his students, said.

Mr Mandavi said these students have not only continued practising wooden calligraphy art after being released from jail, but they also claim to be more attentive while engaged in various works, including farming.

"What can be a bigger achievement than this for me if a person who once wielded rifles returns to the mainstream and leads a peaceful life," Mr Mandavi, who founded self help group 'Shanta Art' in 2015 in remote Bhaisasur village in Kanker, said.

Sanjeet Kumar Yadav, who was lodged in Kanker Jail in 2020 and learnt wooden calligraphy from Mr Mandavi, said his meeting with the latter gave a him a new purpose in life.

"After meeting guruji in jail, I found a new purpose in life. I never imagined I would learn an art," Yadav, hailing from the district's Charama area, said.

"I was in jail for six to seven months. After I was acquitted, I requested guruji to let met stay with him as I wanted to take up woodcraft as a profession," said Yadav, who has been living in Mr Mandavi's house for the past two years.

The 'Shanta Art' group, which includes several former Naxalites, makes nameplates, key rings, pen case and other items for sale from wood, with Mr Mandavi often sending his students to fairs across the country to earn revenue from their craft.

Apart from Mr Mandavi, eminent Pandvani singer Usha Barle and Nacha artiste Domar Singh Kunvar have been selected for the Padma Shri awards from the state.

Ms Barle hails from Durg district and learnt Pandwani, a traditional performing art form, from Padma Vibhushan awardee Teejan Bai, a legendary exponent of the traditional performing art form. Ms Barle has performed in London and New York.

Mr Kunvar, who belongs to Balod district, has been widely recognised for his fight against the social ill of child marriage.

AMU Suspends Student Over Religious Slogan Video On Republic Day

Aligarh Muslim University Friday set up a three-member inquiry committee and suspended a student after a video showed some NCC cadets purportedly raising religious slogans following a Republic Day function here.

According to AMU spokesperson Omar Peerzada, the panel has been asked to submit its report within five days. He told PTI that it would probe the entire sequence of events when the official function was over and the audience was dispersing.

In the 17-second video, a group of NCC cadets were seen chanting "Allah hu Akbar" twice near a flagpole. In another 19-second video, another group of NCC cadets could be seen shouting "Bharat Mata ki jai" and "Vande Mataram" in front of a building.

The spokesperson emphasized the incident should be viewed as an aberration in the university's ethos. A student seen shouting slogans in the first video was suspended on Friday, the spokesperson added.

City Superintendent Police Kuldeep Singh said police have taken cognizance of the incident and have asked the AMU authorities to initiate legal action in the matter.

Samajwadi Party spokesperson Ameesh Jamaai Friday said the entire incident was "engineered to defame the institution". The entire sequence of events has to be investigated to unearth the truth, he said.

BJP leader in Aligarh Nishit Sharma said raising religious slogans on the auspicious occasion was a "very serious matter".

Visva-Bharati University Issues New Letter On Land Issues To Amartya Sen

In a fresh missive to Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, Visva-Bharati university on Friday asked him to immediately hand over parts of a plot he was allegedly occupying in an "unauthorised manner" at Santiniketan.

This is the second such letter from the central university to the noted economist in three days.

Mr Sen earlier asserted that most of the land he is holding in the Santiniketan campus was purchased from the market by his father while some other plots were taken on lease.

"The annexed letter dated January 24 and other documents are self-explanatory. You are in possession of 1.38 acre of land which is in excess of your legal entitlement of 1.25 acre.

"Kindly return the land to Visva-Bharati as early as possible since application of the laws of the land will cause embarrassment to you and also to Visva-Bharati which you endear so much," the letter dated January 27 said.

Mr Sen on January 25 wondered why the central university suddenly has become "so active" in trying to drive him out of that place.

Hinting that action under law would be taken by the university if measures were not taken on the part of Mr Sen now, the letter said, "The procedure for reclamation of illegally-occupied land follows the well-established laws of the land." A Visva-Bharati official said the letter has been delivered to the Santiniketan residence of the economist who mostly lives in the USA.

Three days back, a letter signed by the deputy registrar of the university to Mr Sen said, "It has been found from records and physical survey/demarcation that you are in unauthorised occupation of 13 decimals of land belonging to Visva Bharati...".

Mr Sen told PTI on Wednesday: "I could not see any subtlety in their (university authorities') thinking. There is confusion in their mind and I do not know what to say. I also do not understand the politics behind this attitude of Visva-Bharati university." "This is my residence which was built on leased land from Visva-Bharati in the 1940s. The land was leased out to us for 100 years. Some of the land was also bought by my father from the market following all rules and regulations. There was no danger of overstaying," he had said.

There have been allegations from certain quarters that the university's actions may be politically motivated given the fact that Mr Sen has been critical of many central government policies.

In January 2021 also, Visva-Bharati accused Mr Sen's family of being in illegal possession of land on the campus.

India To Get More Than 100 Cheetahs From South Africa

South Africa said Thursday that it had reached a deal to transfer more than 100 cheetahs to India as part of an ambitious project to reintroduce the spotted cats in the south Asian country.

The environment ministry said an initial batch of 12 cheetahs would be flown to India next month, after eight cheetahs arrived from Namibia last September.

"The plan is to translocate a further 12 annually for the next eight to 10 years" to help establish a "viable and secure cheetah population," the ministry said in a statement.

India was once home to the Asiatic cheetah but the animal was declared extinct there by 1952, primarily because of habitat loss and deaths at the hands of hunters seeking their distinctive spotted hides.

Efforts to reintroduce the animals gathered pace in 2020 when India's Supreme Court ruled that African cheetahs, a different subspecies, could be brought into the country at a "carefully chosen location" on an experimental basis.

Negotiations for the deal with South Africa were long in the making, with the first cheetahs initially expected to be flown to India last August. They have been living in quarantine in the meantime.

"The cheetahs in quarantine... are all still doing well," said Adrian Tordiffe, a veterinary wildlife specialist at the University of Pretoria who is involved in the project.

Officials said the previous transfer from Namibia marked the first intercontinental relocation of cheetahs, the planet's fastest land animal.

The Namibian specimens were released at Kuno National Park, a wildlife sanctuary 320 kilometres (200 miles) south of New Delhi, selected for its abundant prey and grasslands.

Rahul Gandhi Greets Jammu Soldiers Watching Bharat Jodo Yatra Pass By

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday shook hands with some Army personnel watching his 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' from behind the boundary wall of their camp as the march passed through the garrison town of Nagrota here.

Mr Gandhi's gesture to reach out to the soldiers despite the walls secured with barbed wire came a day after his senior party colleague Digvijaya Singh sought proof from the BJP government on the surgical strikes on terror camps across the border.

The former Congress president, who resumed his 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' from Nagrota towards Kashmir, paused outside an Army camp after spotting some personnel watching from behind the wall.

He approached them and shook their hands before marching forward, waving at the crowd gathered on either side of the road and at those trying to catch a glimpse from their homes and shops.

Some of the Army personnel were seen filming the foot march on their mobile phones.

Snubbing Digvijaya Singh, a former Madhya Pradesh chief minister, for questioning the surgical strikes, Mr Gandhi termed his comments "ridiculous", and said the armed forces are doing their job "exceptionally well" and do not need to give any proof.

Mr Gandhi, who faced a volley of questions from the media on Mr Singh's remarks on the surgical strikes and the Pulwama terror attack, said he and his party completely disagreed with the statement.

Mr Singh had on Monday questioned the veracity of the surgical strikes and accused the government of peddling lies.

Addressing a public meeting during the yatra in Jammu and Kashmir, Mr Singh alleged that the government did not agree to the CRPF's request of flying its personnel from Srinagar to Delhi and 40 soldiers sacrificed their lives in Pulwama in 2019 to a terror attack.

"They talk of surgical strikes. They claim to have killed so many people but no proof is given. They are ruling by peddling a bundle of lies," he had alleged.

Bharat Jodo Yatra Has 'Changed The Narrative' In India: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said his Bharat Jodo Yatra has achieved success in "changing the narrative" in the country and brought crores of people together to denounce hatred and spread the message of love.

He alleged that the BJP and the RSS have created an atmosphere of hatred in the country and said suppressing or frightening people cannot stop the truth from coming out.

"The yatra has achieved something fundamental, very powerful and what the yatra has done cannot be changed. It has shown that there are two visions of India, one is hate-filled, arrogant and cowardly and another is love-filled, embracing and brave. It (yatra) has made these two visions absolutely crystal clear," Mr Gandhi told a press conference here.

The Bharat Jodo Yatra, which was started by Mr Gandhi from Kanyakumari on September 7, completed 130th day on Tuesday and left Jammu for Kashmir, where the former Congress president will unfurl the tricolour at party headquarters in Srinagar on January 30 to mark the end of the marathon march.

"Millions of people have walked in support of this yatra, which has changed the narrative in the country. The fundamental fact is that the yatra has been successful and brought India together and shown Indian people believe much more in love and affection," Mr Gandhi said.

He said the sole aim of the yatra is to unite the people against the atmosphere of hatred "created by the BJP and the RSS across the country" and concentration of wealth to a chosen few resulting in inflation and unemployment.

"We have a good yatra which is concluding in the next few days. We learnt a lot from it," he said.

On the controversial BBC documentary 'India: The Modi Question', the Congress leader quoted Hindu religious books and said that the truth cannot be hidden.

"The truth always comes out even if you ban, suppress the press, control the institutions, use CBI, ED. Still, the truth shines bright. It has the nasty habit of coming out. So no amount of banning or frightening people can stop the truth from coming out," he said.

Responding to a question about the recent statement of the defence minister that Mr Gandhi is spreading hatred to gain power and tarnishing India's image on international platforms, he said his heart is not filled with hatred.

"I do not understand how the padyatra across the country that unites the people, bringing them together is harming the interests of India. I can see how hatred and violence the Rajnath Singh's party is spreading, harming communities, castes and genders and defaming the nation," he said.

The Congress leader said Mr Singh is in a party, where he needs permission from the top leadership to speak on anything. "He has no choice in the matter and it is nice he has expressed his opinion which he has done on the orders from the top." Defending his raising political issues and targeting BJP during the ongoing yatra, he said Congress is essentially a political party and political things are going to crop up when you are engaged in such an endeavour.

"People are meeting me and raising their problems. It is now my responsibility to rake up their issues for redressal," he said.

Mr Gandhi said he has only people and their issues in his mind. "There is a clarity (in my mind) that hatred and violence being spread in the country needs to be removed at any cost. I do not accept that India is a country of hate and violence."

Akhilesh Yadav Unhappy Over Party Leader's Ramcharitmanas Remarks: Report

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav is believed to be unhappy with his party colleague Swami Prasad Maurya over his controversial remarks on Ramcharitmanas.

According to sources, Akhilesh Yadav is very angry with Mr Maurya and a press conference can also be held on behalf of the party.

Apart from Akhilesh Yadav, several MLAs of the party are also keeping themselves away from the statement of Mr Maurya.

According to sources, several MLAs have spoken to Akhilesh Yadav over the phone. There is huge discontent within the party over SP MLC's controversial statement.

The Samajwadi Party leader Swami Prasad Maurya on Sunday, sparked a major controversy after he demanded the deletion of "insulting comments and sarcasm" targeted at particular castes and sects in Ramcharitmanas, a poem based on the epic Ramayana.

Speaking to ANI, the SP leader said, "I don't have any issue with Ramcharitramanas but parts of it have insulting comments and sarcasm directed at particular castes and sects. Those should be removed."

Mr Maurya further claimed that in the Ramcharitmanas, which was composed by Tulsidas, there are words hurting the sentiments of the Dalit community.

Uttar Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slammed the Samajwadi Party over Mr Maurya's statement.

UP BJP chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary said, "People like Swami Prasad Maurya are deranged. Akhilesh Yadav should clarify whether it is his party's view or Swami Prasad's personal view.

Senior Samajwadi Party leader and party MLA Ravidas Malhotra said that Swami Prasad Maurya's statement is his personal thoughts and not the statement of the party.

Speaking to ANI, Ravidas Mehrotra said that his statement has reached the party's national president Akhilesh Yadav and action will definitely be taken against such statements in the coming days.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने खारिज की धर्मांतरण कर चुके दलितों के सर्वे को चुनौती देने वाली याचिका

धर्म अपनाने वाले दलितों को भी अनुसूचित जाति का दर्जा (Dalits Leaving Sanatan Dharma)

5 Dead After Consuming Toxic Liquor In Bihar's Siwan

The toll in the suspected hooch tragedy in dry Bihar's Siwan district rose to five after two more deaths were reported on Monday, a senior police officer said

Seven people, who had also taken ill after allegedly consuming the spurious liquor, are currently undergoing treatment at a government hospital, he said.

A probe has been initiated into the matter, and as many as 16 people, including two who had "50 litres spirit in possession", have been arrested thus far in connection with the incident at Bhopatpur sub-division, the officer said.

According to a statement issued by the Bihar Police, "Twelve people were admitted to a district hospital in Siwan around 7 pm on Sunday after they complained of stomach pain, nausea and dizziness. One person was declared dead on arrival by the doctors, and two died when they were taken to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) from the Siwan facility.

"Two more died on Monday on their way to the Patna hospital," it said.

The statement also said that seven people are undergoing treatment at the district hospital, with no major threat looming on them.

Talking to reporters, Additional Director General of Police (headquarters) J S Gangwar said, "Sixteen people, including prime accused Sandeep Chouhan and his brother Deepak, have been arrested in connection with the case; their custodial interrogation is on.

"The duo had brought spirit from Kolkata via Muzaffarpur, claiming that it would be used to make sanitiser. The consignment reached Muzaffarpur on January 18, and the Chouhan brothers then gave the spirit to five people in Siwan." A team of officers has left for Kolkata to nab the supplier, he said.

"Searches to arrest others involved in the illegal liquor trade is currently underway," said the ADG.

A district administration official said that the exact cause of death would be ascertained after the post-mortem report of the deceased arrives.

Sale and consumption of liquor is banned in Bihar.

In December last year, spurious liquor claimed the lives over 50 people in Saran district. The incident had triggered a political slugfest, with opposition leaders mounting a strong attack on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the hooch-related deaths.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had also come under criticism for refusing compensation to the families of the deceased.

Delhi is set to get a woman mayor on Tuesday and she will step into the footsteps of freedom fighter Aruna Asaf Ali who was chosen to the top post in 1958 when the Municipal Corporation of Delhi came into being.

The position of mayor wielded a lot of influence and carried huge prestige till 2012 when the corporation was spilt into three separate civic bodies -- North, South and East municipal corporations -- with each having its own mayor. However, last year, they were reunified and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) again came into existence.

The mayor and deputy mayor of Delhi will be elected on Tuesday by the second municipal House after the December 4 civic polls.

The post of mayor in the national capital sees five single-year terms on a rotation basis, with the first year being reserved for women, the second for open category, third for reserved category, and the remaining two again for the open category.

Delhi will thus get a woman mayor this year.

The December 4 civic polls was the first after the three corporations were unified into the MCD and a fresh delimitation exercise was carried out, reducing the total number of wards from 272 in 2012 to 250.

Thus, after the mayoral poll, the national capital will get a mayor for the city as a whole after a gap of 10 years.

Law scholar Rajni Abbi was the last to be elected to the top post in the MCD in 2011 before its trifurcation.

The MCD had come into being in April 1958. It had began its journey from the historic 1860s-era Town Hall in old Delhi and in April 2010, was shifted to the swanky Civic Centre complex.

Portraits of Ali still adorn the chambers of the old municipal House at Town Hall and at offices at the Civic Centre. A prominent street in the city was also named after her.

The unification of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (104 wards), the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (104 wards) and the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (64 wards) happened last year after the Centre brought a legislation to unify them.

It also capped the total number of wards at 250.

Several former mayors had welcomed the decision, and pitched for according "greater power" and "longer serving tenure" for the post of mayor.

Following the unification, civic polls were held on December 4 and the counting of votes took place on December 7.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the polls by bagging 134 wards and ending the BJP's 15-year rule in the civic body.

The BJP won 104 wards to finish second, while the Congress won nine seats in the 250-member municipal House which will convene on January 24 for the second time after the civic polls.

The nominees for the post of mayor are -- Shelly Oberoi and Ashu Thakur (AAP), and Rekha Gupta (BJP). Oberoi is the AAP's main contender.

Former mayor of North Delhi and senior BJP leader Jai Prakash said it was a matter of great fortune for people of Delhi that it will now again have one mayor for the whole city.

"Aruna Asaf Ali was the first mayor of Delhi, and Rajni Abbi was the last mayor till MCD was trifurcated in 2012. And, after 10 years, again a woman mayor will be at the helm, it is matter of great fortune for both the city as well the person who will become the mayor of Delhi," he told PTI.

In April 2011, the then BJP nominee Rajni Abbi was elected the mayor of Delhi defeating her rival Savita Sharma of Congress by 88 votes. Abbi was then a Delhi University law professor and is currently serving as the varsity's dean.

After the trifurcation, mayoral elections were held for all the three corporations -- NDMC, SDMC and EDMC -- in 2012.

In April 2012, Meera Aggarwal was elected unopposed as the mayor of the then newly-created MDMC while her party colleague Azad Singh had become the deputy mayor.

In May 2012, Annapoorna Mishra was unanimously elected as the mayor of East Delhi while her party colleague Usha Shastri had become the deputy mayor.

Also, in a keenly contested poll, BJP's Savita Gupta was elected as the first mayor of South Delhi in May 2012. Gupta, the then councillor from Amar Colony who had polled 66 votes, trumped NCP's Phoolkali by a margin of 20 votes while BSP's Bir Singh, councillor from Madanpur Khadar, was elected unopposed to the post of deputy mayor.

Amid Row Over 'Mughal Tent' At Jaipur Literature Fest, Organiser's Defence

Amid an outrage by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the 'Mughal Tent' in the Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF), the Organiser of the festival has said that it was named before 16 years ago and will continue with the same.

Sanjoy K Roy, the organiser of the festival said that the leaders have the right to have opinions though the event has nothing to do with politics.

"It is their opinion. In Hollywood 'Mughal' word is used to look at a certain lifestyle and not to denominate any religion or people. We have nothing to do with politics. It was named 16 years ago and will continue the same," Mr Roy said while talking to the media on Saturday.

The BJP has objected to the organisers of the JLF naming one of its venues Mughal Tent, saying that the name had hurt the sentiments of a lot of people in the country.

Rajasthan BJP MLA from Chomu, Ram Lal Sharma said in a video, "The organisers of JLF are not aware that it is our duty to name elements at the festival based on Rajasthan's culture. Maharana Pratap and Mirabai are all from here, but organisers have named the domes differently. One of the domes is named Mughal Tent. By doing so, what mentality are they trying to promote? Organisers should at least have considered the historical culture of this land."

Responding to the BJP leader's remark, Mr Roy said that Ram Lal Sharma was entitled to hs opinion.

"We have the right to what we call each of our venues. Those who say 'why did you name it after Mughals' forget that 'Mughal' represents a completely different world," he added.

Opposition Leaders Tweet Link Of BBC Series On PM, Slam "Censorship"

  1. Asked about the government's move to block access to the BBC documentary "India: The Modi Question", Congress's Gaurav Vallabh told reporters: "There is a scheme of the government of India called 'Block in India', like 'Make in India', 'Startup India'. The government does not want difficult questions to be asked. If the BBC headquarters were in Delhi, the ED (Enforcement Directorate) might have been on their doorstep by now."
  2. Trinamool Congress's Derek O'Brien and Mahua Moitra both tweeted video links to the documentary. Calling it "censorship", Mr O'Brien said Twitter had taken down his earlier post which had received "lakhs of views". Today, he said another of his tweets has survived "for almost 3 days. WATCH".
  3. Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra, known for her strong speeches in parliament, declared that the government is "insecure". "Shame that the emperor & courtiers of the world's largest democracy are so insecure (sic)," she tweeted. "Sorry, Haven't been elected to represent world's largest democracy to accept censorship. Here's the link. Watch it while you can," read a second tweet.
  4. "In the age of VPN, how impactful are these bans under emergency clauses cited by the I&B Ministry to ban a BBC documentary. The more they pour scorn on it, write protest letters, the more people would be curious to watch," tweeted Shiv Sena's Priyanka Chaturvedi.
  5. Union law minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted saying "Some people in India still haven't gotten over the colonial intoxication". "They consider BBC above the Supreme Court of India and lower the country's dignity and image to any extent to please their moral masters," read a rough translation of his Hindi tweet.
  6. "Minorities, or for that matter every community in India is moving ahead positively. India's image cannot be disgraced by malicious campaigns launched inside or outside India," he added in another tweet.
  7. Sources said the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry has asked Twitter and YouTube to block the first episode of the BBC docu-series, which claims to have investigated certain aspects of the 2002 Gujarat riots when PM Modi was the state's Chief Minister. The Centre had slammed the series, calling it a "propaganda piece that lacks objectivity and reflects a colonial mindset".
  8. "We think this is a propaganda piece designed to push a particular discredited narrative. The bias and lack of objectivity and frankly continuing colonial mindset are blatantly visible," the foreign ministry has said.
  9. Over 300 former judges, bureaucrats, and prominent citizens  have slammed the BBC, saying it is the archetype of past British imperialism in India "setting itself up as both judge and jury to resurrect Hindu-Muslim tensions". Prominent Indian-origin UK citizens have condemned the series. Prominent UK Citizen Lord Rami Ranger said the "BBC caused a great deal of hurt to over a billion Indians."
  10. Earlier this week, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak distanced himself from the series. In a snub to Pakistan-origin MP Imran Hussain, who raised the matter, he told the UK parliament that he "doesn't agree with the characterisation" of his Indian counterpart.

2 More Bodies Of Indian Nationals Identified From Nepal Plane Crash

Nepal's health officials on Sunday identified two more bodies of the Indian nationals who died in a plane crash in Pokhara and assured the victims' relatives that they will be handed over all four bodies on Monday.

Nepalese authorities on Tuesday started handing over to family members the bodies of those killed in the January 14 crash of a Yeti Airlines passenger plane with 72 people on board.

Fifty-three Nepalese passengers and 15 foreign nationals, including 5 Indians, and four crew members were on board the aircraft when it crashed in a river gorge in the resort city of Pokhara.

The five Indians, all reportedly from Uttar Pradesh, have been identified as Abhisekh Kushwaha, 25, Bishal Sharma, 22, Anil Kumar Rajbhar, 27, Sonu Jaiswal, 35, and Sanjaya Jaiswal.

The doctors at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital have completed postmortem of all the bodies they received. Barring 12 bodies, the rest have been identified by the doctors.

The doctors on Sunday identified two more dead bodies of the Indian nationals.

They identified the bodies of Anil Kumar Rajbhar and Abhisehk Kushwaha on the basis of evidence provided by the relatives of the victims, according to hospital sources.

Earlier, on Saturday the body of Sharma was identified. On Friday, the body of Sanjaya Jaiswal was handed over to his family who took it back to India.

The only remaining body yet to be identified is that of Sonu.

Vijaya Jaishwal, elder brother of Sonu, and Rajendra Prasad Jaiswal, Sonu's father, waited at the hospital on Sunday to receive the body.

Other relatives present at the hospital were Ramdras Rajbhar, father of Anil, Abhinesh Kushwaha, younger brother of Abhisekh and Vishwojit Sharma, younger brother of Bishal.

The relatives of four Indian nationals have been waiting for four days to receive the dead bodies of their relatives.

One of the relatives said on Saturday they want to take back all four bodies of the Indians in a single consignment.

The doctors at the hospital on Sunday assured the families of the Indian victims that they were trying to verify the body of Sonu with the signs provided by the family and will most probably hand over all four bodies to relatives on Monday, one of the relatives told PTI.

Meanwhile, the Nepal Army said on Sunday it continued its search operation at the Seti River gorge and the surrounding areas to find the remaining one body and will resume it on Monday.

So far, only 71 dead bodies have been recovered.

According to Nepal's civil aviation body, 914 people have died in air crashes in the country since the first disaster was recorded in August 1955.

The Yeti Airlines tragedy in Pokhara on January 14 was the 104th crash in Nepali skies and the third biggest in terms of casualties.
