5-Year-Old Youngest In World To Undergo Successful "Awake" Brain Surgery

Doctors at AIIMS, Delhi, successfully performed a brain tumour surgery on a five-year-old girl while keeping her in a conscious state during the operation with the hospital claiming that she was the youngest patient in the world to undergo such a procedure.

The procedure termed as 'awake craniotomy' (conscious sedation technique) surgery for left perisylvian intraaxial brain tumour was performed on January 4, AIIMS said in a statement.

The child presented with a history of seizures and her brain MRI was done which showed a tumour in the left side of her brain adjacent to speech/language area, it said.

The surgery lasted three hours, including time taken for giving local anaesthesia to the child by neuroanaesthetists.

The tumour was removed successfully by a team of neurosurgeons as she remained conscious throughout the procedure.

"Technological adjuncts viz preoperative functional MRI brain, intraoperative ultrasonography, neuronavigation were used to localise tumour precisely during resection while mapping of functional areas was being carried out under awake conditions. Ice cold saline was used for the brain surface to prevent any seizures during the procedure,” the statement said.

“The child is doing well and will be sent home on Monday," it said.

A long discussion was held between team members, patient's family and the child before taking a decision to go ahead with the surgery. They were counselled at length on steps of procedure, it stated.

She was shown common objects, common animals and given some tasks for language and sensorimotor assessments before surgery, which were repeated during the surgical procedure also.

She is a first standard student and was quick in identifying the picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the surgery, the statement said.

"Awake surgeries for brain tumours are done for maximising tumour removals and minimising neurological deficits usually. During awake craniotomy, patients should feel a minimum level of pain while being completely able to cooperate in neurological tests,” it said.

"Although this method is called awake craniotomy, this method requires even more collaboration in perfect harmony of the surgical and anaesthesia teams than other operations under general anaesthesia said,'' Dr Deepak Gupta, Professor of Neurosurgery who performed this operation with his team with neuroanesthesia team led by Dr Mihir Pandia and Dr Gyanendra Pal Singh.

"Akshita happens to be the youngest child in the world to undergo successful brain tumour surgery under awake conditions at this age at AIIMS, Delhi," Dr Gupta said.

Ajit Pawar On Stage, His Party Worker Claims BJP MLA Slapped Him

An office bearer of the Ajit Pawar faction of NCP accused BJP MLA Sunil Kamble of hitting him during an event at Sassoon Hospital in Pune, a charge denied by the latter even as a purported video of the incident went viral on social media.

In the video, Pune Cantonment MLA Sunil Kamble is seen coming down the steps and slapping a person who comes in the way. The identity of the person is not known though sources said he was a policeman.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar was also present at the function.

Meanwhile, Jitendra Satav, an office bearer of the Ajit Pawar faction of NCP, claimed Mr Kamble hit him at the event. Mr Satav also claimed Sunil Kamble hit a police personnel.

Mr Satav submitted a complaint with the Bundgarden police and senior inspector Santosh Patil confirmed the receipt of the former's application and said it was being looked into.

Denying the allegations, Mr Kamble said, "I did not assault anyone. I was coming down the steps when someone came in the way. I pushed him and went ahead."

He also said he did not know who Mr Satav was and there was no question of assaulting him.

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma On Key To Stop Violence In Manipur

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Friday said there has to be a political solution to the ongoing ethnic strife in neighbouring Manipur, adding that there is no "magic solution" to stop violence in Manipur.

Responding to a query on reports of fresh violence in Manipur, he said, "(It will) keep on happening unless and until we find a solution. But the solution is not with me. It lies with the Chief Minister of Manipur."

Asked what would be his suggestion to his Manipur counterpart N Biren Singh, Lalduhoma said, "There has to be negotiations. There is some demand from the tribal population and tribal leaders. That has to be discussed with the Union Home Ministry. A political solution has to be there."

Lalduhoma was in Kolkata to attend an interactive session of the Merchants' Chamber of Commerce.

Responding to a query whether his government will facilitate any discussion to stop violence in the neighbouring state, the Mizoram Chief Minister said, "No I am an outsider."

To a question on Mizoram facing the brunt of ethnic violence in Manipur with internally displaced people (IDPs) streaming in from the neighbouring state, Lalduhoma said, "On humanitarian grounds, we have to look after them. We are taking care of them. There is no problem. They are not foreigners. They are Indian citizens."

According to an official of the Mizoram Home Department, around 9,000 displaced people from Manipur are now living in Mizoram.

More than 180 people have been killed and several hundred injured since ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3 last year when a Tribal Solidarity March was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

अब सिर्फ घर के देने होंगे पैसे : यूपी RERA के इस फैसले से खरीदारों को कैसे होगा फायदा?

उत्तर प्रदेश में रियल एस्टेट विनियमन एवं विकास अधिनियम (RERA) ने घर खरीदारों के हित में एक बड़ा फैसला लिया है. अब खरीदारों को सिर्फ घर के पैसे देने होंगे. अब बिल्डरों को घर खरीदारों को घर का असल एरिया साफ-साफ बताना होगा. अब तक कई बिल्डर कॉमन एरिया को भी शामिल करके पूरे हिस्से का पैसा घर खरीदारों से मांगते रहे हैं. खरीदार को घर के साथ ही कॉमन एरिया की कीमत भी देनी पड़ती है. कई बार तो घर बहुत छोटा मिलता है. कई बिल्डर यह बताते ही नहीं हैं कि कारपेट एरिया कितना होगा. लेकिन अब यूपी रेरा ने कह दिया है कि सुपर एरिया पर फ्लैट नहीं बेचे जा सकेंगे. 

यूपी रीयल एस्टेट रेगुलेशन एंड डेवलपमेंट एक्ट (RERA) ने कहा कि सुपर एरिया नहीं चलेगा. सुपर एरिया पर फ़्लैट की बिक्री अवैध मानी जाएगी. कारपेट एरिया के आधार पर फ़्लैट बेचना होगा. सुपर एरिया का कोई औचित्य नहीं है. RERA अधिनियम में सुपर एरिया की कोई परिभाषा नहीं है. रजिस्ट्रेशन के समय फ़्लैट की संख्या, दूसरी जगहों का उल्लेख होता है. यूपी RERA के पोर्टल पर बिक्री के लिए एक मॉडल समझौता है. यह समझौता कारपेट एरिया पर ही आधारित है. 

यूपी RERA ने अहम निर्देशों में कहा है कि, अब खरीदारों को सिर्फ घर के पैसे देने होंगे. फ़्लैट सुपर एरिया के नाम पर नहीं बिकेंगे. सिर्फ अपने घर का पैसे देना होगा, कॉमन एरिया का नहीं देना होगा. कारपेट एरिया का ही पैसा दिया जाएगा. कई बिल्डर सुपर एरिया का पैसा लेते हैं. वे बड़ा एरिया बताते हैं, छोटा घर मिलता है. यूपी RERA ने कहा कि सुपर एरिया नाम की कोई चीज नहीं. रेरा के फैसले से रियल एस्टेट सेक्टर में बदलाव दिखेगा. 

इससे रियल एस्टेट सेक्टर में कई बदलाव आने की आशा है. इससे पारदर्शिता बढ़ेगी. पता होगा कि, घर की कितनी क़ीमत देनी है. कारपेट एरिया होने पर कीमतें बढ़ने की संभावना है. 

यूपी रेरा ने कहा है कि सुपर एरिया पर फ़्लैट की बिक्री अवैध मानी जाएगी. कारपेट एरिया के आधार पर फ़्लैट बेचना होगा. RERA अधिनियम में सुपर एरिया की कोई परिभाषा नहीं है. 

क्या है सुपर एरिया और कारपेट एरिया? 

बिल्डर सुपर एरिया में कॉमन एरिया भी शामिल करता है. कॉमन एरिया में लिफ़्ट, गैलरी और दूसरी जगहें आती हैं. सुपर एरिया से फ़्लैट के सही आकार का अनुमान नहीं होता. कारपेट एरिया वह है जितनी जगह में सिर्फ फ़्लैट होता है.

Cold Wave Grips Delhi, Temperature Settled Four Notches Below Normal

It was a bone-chilling cold in the national capital on Wednesday with the maximum temperature settling at 15.7 degrees Celsius, four notches below the normal, the weather department said.

Safdarjung, Delhi's main weather station, recorded a visibility of 200 meters at 8:30 am, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 7.3 degrees Celsius, below the normal for the season's average.

"In Delhi, the temperature is set to hold steady over the next two days, while in some areas it may drop to around 6 or 7.5 degrees Celsius," said Kuldeep Srivastava, scientist and head, of Regional Weather Forecasting Centre.

Srivastava said the first ten days of January are considered the coldest, but it's relatively warmer this year compared to the previous year.

"The minimum temperature has not yet dropped to 2 or 3 degrees, unlike in previous years when it occurred for one or two days," an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) told PTI.

According to the Indian Railways, 26 Delhi-bound trains were delayed by one to six hours due to fog.

The humidity levels oscillated between 75 per cent and 100 per cent on Wednesday.

The IMD has forecast moderate fog for Thursday with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to settle around 17 and 7 degrees Celsius respectively.

The 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 4 pm was 341, which stands in the "very poor" category.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and 401 and 500 "severe".

Not Tenable At This Stage: Court Rejects 12-Year-old's Abortion Petition

The Kerala High Court has declined a plea requesting the termination of the pregnancy of a 12-year-old girl, allegedly in an incestual relationship with her minor brother. The court noted that the foetus, now at 34 weeks, is fully developed and preparing for life outside the womb.

The court stated that termination at this stage is not tenable, if not impossible, and the child must be allowed to be born through either a caesarean section or normal delivery, a decision left to medical experts.

The parents argued that childbirth would have severe consequences on the girl's physical and mental well-being.

In its December 22 order, the court allowed the petitioners to seek continuous assistance from doctors at the nearby Government Medical College.

After reaching 36 weeks of gestation, they can approach the Medical College Superintendent for evaluation by experts, who will then decide on the nature of delivery.

The court assured protection for the baby after birth, emphasising the girl's comfort with her parents until delivery.

The parents were directed to ensure the accused brother stays away from her, with competent authorities enforcing this directive.

The court emphasised maintaining the petitioners' anonymity throughout the process and thereafter.

Ahead of Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Chief Arvind Kejriwal's appearance before the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the alleged excise policy scam, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday attacked him citing an old 'X' post of his.

Mr Kejriwal, earlier, wrote in an 'X' post, "As a patriot Indian, my head hangs in shame when our corrupt leaders do not appear before ED and CBI even after multiple summonses by the investigating agencies when they should have resigned from their post immediately as soon as the allegations were made."

Earlier in December, Mr Kejriwal skipped ED summons twice, which were issued to him in connection with the alleged excise policy scam. 

As per ANI sources, Mr Kejriwal is likely to appear before the Enforcement Directorate on January 3 in connection with the excise policy case.

On December 22, ED issued a third summons to Chief Minister Kejriwal in connection with the excise policy case, asking him to appear before the agency on January 3.

Mr Kejriwal was issued the second summons by the ED on December 18, asking him to depose at the federal agency's office on December 21, which the Chief Minister skipped.

The Delhi Chief Minister was first called by the central agency to appear on November 2, but he did not depose, alleging that the notice was "vague, motivated and unsustainable in law."

Mr Sidhu took a swipe at the Delhi CM, stating, "Practice what you preach".

"Practice what you preach...face the ED music even if you don't like the tune ... resign from your post till you come clean like I did in Dec 2006," he wrote in a post on 'X'.

Earlier in 2006, Mr Sidhu (then BJP leader) had resigned from the post of Lok Sabha MP following his conviction in a case of death in a road rage involving him.

पंजाब (Punjab) में एक शख्स को पीएचडी और चार मास्टर डिग्रियों के बावजूद अपना घर चलाने के लिए सब्जियां बेचनी पड़ रही है. 39 साल के डॉ. संदीप सिंह पटियाला की पंजाबी यूनिवर्सिटी में संविदा प्रोफेसर थे. हालांकि उन्हें नौकरी छोड़नी पड़ी और पैसे कमाने के लिए सब्जियां बेचना शुरू करना पड़ा. डॉ. संदीप सिंह 11 वर्षों तक पंजाबी यूनिवर्सिटी के लॉ विभाग में संविदा प्रोफेसर थे. उन्होंने लॉ में पीएचडी की है, इसके साथ ही पंजाबी, पत्रकारिता और राजनीति विज्ञान सहित चार मास्टर डिग्री हासिल की है और अभी भी पढ़ाई कर रहे हैं.

डॉ. संदीप सिंह ने वेतन कटौती और अनियमित वेतन जैसी बाधाओं का सामना करने के बाद अपनी नौकरी छोड़ दी. 

उन्होंने कहा, ‘मुझे नौकरी छोड़नी पड़ी क्योंकि मुझे समय पर वेतन नहीं मिलता था और अक्सर वेतन में कटौती होती थी. मेरे लिए उस नौकरी से गुजारा करना मुश्किल हो गया था. इसलिए मैंने अपने और अपने परिवार के जीवनयापन के लिए सब्जियां बेचना शुरू किया.‘ 

सब्जियां बेचकर ज्यादा कमा रहे संदीप सिंह 

अपनी सब्जी की गाड़ी और उस पर लगे बोर्ड ‘पीएचडी सब्जी वाला‘ के साथ डॉ. संदीप सिंह रोजाना घर-घर जाकर सब्जियां बेचते हैं. उनका कहना है कि वह प्रोफेसर की तुलना में सब्जियां बेचकर ज्यादा पैसा कमाते हैं. पूरे दिन काम करने के बाद वह वापस घर आते हैं और अपने एग्जाम के लिए पढ़ाई करते हैं. 

नौकरी छोड़ी, लेकिन अपना जुनून नहीं 

भले ही डॉ. संदीप सिंह ने पढ़ाने से ब्रेक ले लिया है, लेकिन उन्होंने अपना जुनून नहीं छोड़ा है. वह पैसे बचाना चाहते हैं और एक दिन अपना खुद का ट्यूशन सेंटर खोलना चाहते हैं.

Gujarat Man, 2 Daughters, Son Die By Suicide After Jumping In Front Of Train

A man, his two daughters and a son allegedly committed suicide on Sunday by jumping in front of a train in Botad district in Gujarat, an official said.

The incident took place at 6:30pm between Ningala and Alampur railway stations, Railway Protection Force sub inspector VS Gole said.

"As part of a suicide pact, the four jumped in front of a passenger train on its way from Bhavnagar to Gandhidham. The bodies of the man, his two daughters and a son were found along the tracks," he said.

The man, identified as Mangabhai Vijuda (42), was out on bail after getting arrested on charges of attempt to murder following a fight with a relative, as per police.

The others who died are his daughters Sonam (17) and Rekha (21) and son Jignesh (19).

They belonged to Nana Sakhpar village in the district's Gadhada taluka, he said.

The bodies have been sent for post mortem and further probe into why they took this extreme step is underway, the official said.
