A 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped by her neighbour in Jharkhand's Palamu district, police said on Saturday. The incident happened on Tuesday, but the complaint was filed on Saturday as the local panchayat was allegedly preventing the woman and her husband from going to the police station because the accused is the brother-in-law of the 'mukhiya' or village head, they said. The accused, a 36-year-old man, took the woman's husband to a programme on Tuesday night and returned to the village a while later alone, leaving him there. On returning to the village, he went to the woman's house, gagged her and took her to an isolated place, where he allegedly raped her, police said. Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC), Vijay Sampla on Friday said Bihar ranks in the second position in the country in crimes against Scheduled Caste (SC) people and it is a matter of concern. He, however, did not reveal the name of the state which tops the list. “Bihar is at second position in the country, when it comes to crime, including murder, against SCs. The state government has not taken any concrete steps to check crimes against SCs,” Mr Sampla told reporters. He also did not provide details about the incidents of crimes against SC people in Bihar. The granthi of Gurdwara Hatt Sahib in Sultanpur Lodhi here was injured after he was attacked by a masked man, police said on Friday. The accused, who was later overpowered by sewadars , was identified as Lakhbir Singh, a resident of Sarupwal village, they said. The accused often visited Gurdwara Hatt Sahib. On Thursday evening, he went there wearing a mask. The sewadars present there objected to him covering his face but he ignored them and offered prayers, said Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sultanpur Lodhi, Babandeep Singh. Indian mountaineer Piyali Basak who scaled Mt. Makalu has been rescued from the mountain after she experienced some difficulty while descending from the peak, the organisers said. The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed serious concern over the death of three cheetahs translocated from South Africa and Namibia to Kuno National Park (KNP) of Madhya Pradesh in less than two months and asked the Centre to rise above politics and consider shifting them to Rajasthan. The Punjab Police and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) today carried out raids on hideouts of gangsters and anti-social elements across the state, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here. The cordon-and-search operations were conducted in all 28 police districts of the state, he said, adding the NIA carried out raids at 58 locations and the state police at 143. At least 125 teams of the Punjab Police having more than 1,200 personnel were involved, Mr Yadav said. In an official statement, the DGP said commissioners and senior superintendents of police were directed to personally monitor the raids and make teams available so that the operation could be carried out simultaneously. The raids were planned after questioning recently arrested gangsters and criminals, he added. A 28-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death with a stick by his friend in front of the victim's mother over some issue in Korba district of Chhattisgarh, police said on Wednesday. Basant Kanwar suffered serious injuries on his chest and head after he was brutally thrashed by his childhood friend Raj Singh Kanwar (27) in Bhulsidih village under Balco police station area on Sunday (May 14), they said. He later succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Bilaspur on Tuesday, they said. A private nursing home operator here was booked after allegations that a girl's leg has to be amputated due to wrong plastering, official said here. The FIR was registered after Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Brajesh Pathak took cognisance of the matter. Chief Medical Officer Dr Satish Kumar Singh told PTI that eight-year-old Rimmi Gupta, a resident of Daulatpur in Motipur tehsil, suffered an injury in her right leg three-four months ago and was taken to Rampur Polyclinic and Healthcare Center in Khairighat area. A 26-year-old man allegedly strangled his seven-year-old son to death following a dispute with his second wife in Indore, Madhya Pradesh on Monday, police said. The boy was the son of the first wife of the accused who had died six years ago, an officer said. After committing the crime in Tejaji Nagar area, he fled on a motorcycle, Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ashish Patel said. "His second wife was adamant that she would not keep the son born to his first wife with her. She was not willing to return to his house from her maternal home in Rajgarh due to this dispute," Patel said. A hunt is on to arrest the man, the ACP said. Forty children were injured in a head-on collision between a school bus and a Punjab Roadways bus in Jagraon, about 50 km from Ludhiana on Monday, police said. Ten passengers travelling in the roadways bus were also injured, they said. All the injured were taken to hospitals in Ludhiana. The condition of the three children is stated to be serious. Ludhiana Rural Police District Superintendent of Police (SP) Satinder Singh Virk said, "The school bus was going to drop students back at their homes when the incident occurred".
