Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will meet his Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar on May 9, amid talks of regional parties coming together ahead of the 2024 general elections, officials said. Nitish Kumar will meet Naveen Patnaik at 'Naveen Niwas' in Bhubaneswar around 12 pm, they said. The Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) leader had recently announced that he would travel across the country to unite opposition parties ahead of the Lok Sabha polls next year. He has already met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, and Left leaders Sitaram Yechury and D Raja. A 26-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a three-year-old girl on the pretext of giving her an ice cream in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district, a police official said on Friday. "The accused had come to his in-laws house here in the village and he took the girl on the pretext of giving her an ice cream on Thursday. When the minor was not found for a long time, the family members searched her in nearby areas and informed dial 100 about the matter," a senior police officer said. He added that acting on the information, the police reached there. A citizen's right to move the Supreme Court under Article 32 of the Constitution has been given such importance because the State, if left without checks and balances, has the potential to become a "tyrannical institution" that can take the civil and individual liberties of its people for granted, a top court judge has said. Supreme Court judge Justice Krishna Murari made these observations while delivering a split verdict in a case where a question arose about whether an individual can approach the top court under Article 32 for settlement of a dispute under the Customs Act. Article 32 gives individuals the right to move the Supreme Court for justice when they feel their fundamental rights have been infringed. The chief minister chaired an urgent meeting with top officials to ensure the safety of students of Meghalaya following reports of violence in Manipur. "The chief minister highlighted that the safety of all students of Meghalaya must be ensured and directed the officials to come up with a plan for evacuation of students if the situation arises," a senior official told PTI. The body parts of a woman, reportedly an anganwadi worker, were recovered in a forest area in Jharkhand's Sahibganj district, police said on Wednesday. The skull of the woman and some other body parts were found at the spot in Chatki village on Tuesday evening, they said. Blood-stained clothes, footwear and a key of a motorcycle were also recovered from the place, some 400 km from state capital Ranchi, a police officer said. Villagers identified the woman as Maloti Soren, an anganwadi worker, with the help of the recovered items, Borio Police Station In-charge Jagannath Pan said. Sahibganj SDPO Rajendra Kumar Dubey, however, said the seized items will undergo forensic probe in a bid to establish her identity. The Supreme Court on Tuesday said the judgments delivered by it are the "law of the land" and there is no question of anyone violating the principles laid down in the verdicts. The court made these observations while hearing a matter relating to the compliance of its July last year verdict, in which it had passed several directions, including that the Centre may consider the introduction of a separate enactment in the nature of a bail Act so as to streamline the process of grant of bail. "A judgment of this court, including the one in Antil's case (in which the July 2022 verdict was delivered), is the law of the land. There is no question of anyone violating the principles laid down. Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday said the Narendra Modi government has not done anything to undermine the judiciary's independence, and every institution should respect the 'Lakshman rekha' or boundary set by the Constitution. Speaking at an event organised by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa, he sought to refute the narrative that the government was exerting pressure on the judiciary. A non-bailable warrant has been issued against a professor and two former professors of the Allahabad University following a complaint from an assistant professor, police said here on Monday. Deepshikha Sonkar, the assistant professor in the department of economics, got a case lodged in August 2016 against the then head of the department, Professor Prahlad Kumar, Professor Manmohan Krishna and Professor Javed Akhtar under sections 354C (voyeurism), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act at the Karnalganj police station. A dismissed Delhi Police constable was arrested for allegedly posing as an on-duty policeman to demand money from people citing exigencies only to get away with the amount, officials said on Monday. The accused has been identified a Rohit, a resident of Jhajjar in Haryana, they said. He was previously involved in seven cases, mostly of cheating. Rohit was selected as a Delhi Police constable in 2016 and was dismissed from service in 2021 for allegedly indulging in criminal activities, a senior police officer said. Recounting how he was defrauded, Complainant Satendar Singh, 55, a taxi driver from New Usmanpur, said the incident took place on Sunday when he was waiting at the Faridabad bus stand, opposite to the Kashmeri Gate ISBT. A Pakistani court has dismissed a petition seeking ownership over legendary Bollywood actor Raj Kapoor's Haveli in the historic walled city here in the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which has been declared a national heritage by the provincial government in 2016. After the eighth flight of A C-130 Indian Airforce plane carrying 40 Indians reached India, the no. of evacuated Indians reached the mark of 2,300, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar said on Sunday. "A C-130 Indian Airforce flight has landed in New Delhi with 40 passengers. With this flight, around 2,300 people have reached India," EAM Jaishankar tweeted. The number reached the 2300 mark on the 8th flight however, following it, three more flights carried 229, 288 and 135 passengers respectively, taking the number of evacuees to more than 2500.
