भोपाल गैस पीड़ितों के हितों के लिए काम करने वाले पांच एनजीओ (गैर सरकारी संगठनों) ने उच्चतम न्यायालय द्वारा सुधारात्मक याचिका को खारिज किए जाने पर नाराजगी व्यक्त करते हुए केंद्र सरकार से पीड़ितों को पर्याप्त मुआवजा दिए जाने की मांग की है. सुधारात्मक याचिका में गैस पीड़ितों के लिए यूनियन कार्बाइड कॉरपोरेशन (यूसीसी) की उत्तराधिकारी कंपनियों से 7,844 करोड़ रुपये के अतिरिक्त मुआवजे की मांग की गयी थी. भोपाल में दिसंबर 1984 में हुए गैस कांड में तीन हजार लोगों की मौत हो गयी थी और हजारों लोग इससे बीमार हो गए. गैस पीड़ितों के लिए अतिरिक्त मुआवजे की मांग करने वाली याचिका को शीर्ष अदालत द्वारा 14 मार्च को खारिज कर दिया गया था.  ‘भोपाल ग्रुप फॉर इंफॉर्मेशन एंड एक्शन' की रचना ढींगरा ने पीटीआई-भाषा को बताया, 'न्यायाधीशों ने इस बुनियादी तथ्य की अनदेखी की है कि यूनियन कार्बाइड के जहरीले कचरे से भोपाल में भूजल प्रदूषित हुआ है, जिसका 1984 गैस हादसे से कोई संबंध नहीं है. उन्होंने इस बात को नज़रअंदाज़ किया कि यूनियन कार्बाइड द्वारा गैस हादसे से पहले और बाद में भी हज़ारों टन जहरीले कचरे को असुरक्षि...

A woman was allegedly raped by her father's friend and the crime was orchestrated by her father and stepmother in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Monday. The accused father and his friend Rashid have been arrested while the stepmother is missing, they said. The woman, in her complaint, alleged that her father called his friend to their home on March 13 and her stepmother locked her and Rashid inside a room and he raped her, SP (Rural) Sagar Jain told PTI. The victim, who is married, said her father and stepmother threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the incident, he said. The woman alleged that even before her marriage, Rashid had raped her several times in the knowledge of her parents, Jain said. An FIR has been registered and efforts are on to arrest the missing stepmother, the SP said. The Bar Council of India (BCI) assured Indian lawyers on Sunday that foreign advocates and law firms will not be allowed to appear in any court or judicial forum and that they can only advise their clients about foreign laws and international laws. The BCI assurance came after its recent decision to permit foreign lawyers and law firms to practise in certain areas evoked mixed reactions and created "some misgivings". Recently, the apex bar body took a significant decision to permit foreign lawyers and law firms to practise in areas such as foreign law, international legal issues and arbitration matters, saying that the legal fraternity here may be left behind if it sleeps over the matter. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday launched a scathing attack on Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray accusing him of attempting to destroy the careers of leaders of his own party. Addressing a rally at Khed in Ratnagiri district from the same venue where Mr Thackeray had addressed a gathering a fortnight ago, Mr Shinde said he was the true inheritor of the legacy of Bal Thackeray, founder of Shiv Sena. The Election Commission recently recognised the faction led by Mr Shinde as the Shiv Sena and allotted it the "bow and arrow" poll symbol.
