"If My Remote With Someone Else...": Congress Chief's Counter To PM Modi

Hitting back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "remote control" jibe at him and the Congress, AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday asked as to where was BJP chief JP Nadda's remote control.

Accusing the Modi-led BJP government of "troubling" party leader Rahul Gandhi for "speaking the truth", the Congress President said he doesn't fear such things and was ready for everything.

"PM Modi came to Belagavi and said - Kharge has become President (Congress), but remote control is with someone else. Okay, my remote control is with someone else, but where is Mr Nadda's (BJP national President J P Nadda) remote control?" Mr Kharge asked.

Addressing the 'Yuva Kranti Samavesha', a youth convention, organised by the party's state unit here, he said: "Mr Nadda speaks under control of whose remote? There are lots of weak spots about you (BJP), for us (Congress) to speak about. You lack courage..." Claiming that Mr Kharge, who hails from the state, was insulted and disrespected by the Congress in favour of a "family", despite his seniority and age, PM Modi while addressing a public meet on February 27 had said, "This shows Mr Kharge is Congress President just for the sake of it, and looking at the way he is treated, everyone can see and understand, as to whose hands the remote control is in." Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, General Secretaries KC Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala, state unit chief DK Shivakumar, Legislature Party leader and Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah among several leaders were part of the mega rally organised at CPED ground.

"Your (BJP government's) ED, CBI or CVC cannot overpower us, we don't fear them. Rahul Gandhi has never feared and will never fear. He speaks the truth, and such a person is being troubled. Let them do it, will they jail him? We are ready for everything," he added.

Pointing out that during the course of the nationwide Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, Mr Gandhi met farmers, youth, women, and every strata of the society, Mr Kharge said: "Forty-six days after the speech made by Rahul Gandhi in Jammu and Kashmir about the problems shared by the people, Delhi Police came to his door seeking for proof regarding his statement on alleged rape or sexual harassment on a women, quoting her."

Despite the Karnataka contractors' association giving proof for their 40 per cent commission charge in the state, no action is being taken, Mr Kharge claimed. "Modi and Shah (Amit Shah) should take action here and make an inquiry as the proof is already given here, then come to Rahul Gandhi." This was Mr Kharge's first visit to Belagavi after taking over as the Congress President.

He pointed out that Belagavi was a "sacred land" for Congress, as Mahatma Gandhi was elected as the party's President in the district in 1924, and Jawaharlal Nehru was appointed as the General Secretary.

Mr Kharge, seeking the blessings of the people of the state for the upcoming assembly polls, asked the party leaders and workers to fight the polls with unity.

He also accused the BJP government in Karnataka of rampant corruption, and praised the KPCC's poll 'guarantees' including the unemployment allowance for the youth, which was announced today as the fourth 'guarantee', in the event of the party coming to power.

The party has already announced three poll 'guarantees' — 200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti), Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi), and 10 kg of rice free to every member of a BPL household (Anna Bhagya).

Foreign Lawyers, Firms Can't Appear In Indian Court, Says Lawyers' Body

The Bar Council of India (BCI) assured Indian lawyers on Sunday that foreign advocates and law firms will not be allowed to appear in any court or judicial forum and that they can only advise their clients about foreign laws and international laws.

The BCI assurance came after its recent decision to permit foreign lawyers and law firms to practise in certain areas evoked mixed reactions and created "some misgivings".

Recently, the apex bar body took a significant decision to permit foreign lawyers and law firms to practise in areas such as foreign law, international legal issues and arbitration matters, saying that the legal fraternity here may be left behind if it sleeps over the matter.

The BCI decision to notify the Bar Council of India Rules for Registration and Regulation of Foreign Lawyers and Foreign Law Firms in India, 2022 evoked mixed reactions from bar leaders.

"There are some misgivings in circulation about the recently published Gazette notification by BCI regarding entry of foreign lawyers and law firms in India. BCI, therefore, deems it appropriate to clarify the issue and place the following facts for the information of all advocates and the general public, so that there is no scope of any misapprehension or misinformation,” it said in a release.

"Foreign lawyers and law firms shall be allowed to advise their clients about foreign laws and international laws only," the statement issued by Srimanto Sen, the BCI secretary, stated.

Foreign lawyers and law firms would render advisory work about such laws for their foreign clients only, it said, adding that they will be allowed to function in “non litigation areas only”.

"Foreign lawyers and law firms shall not be allowed to appear in any Court, Tribunal, Board, before any Statutory or Regulatory Authority or any forum legally entitled to take evidence on oath and/or having trappings of a court,” it said.

The entry of foreign lawyers would be on reciprocal basis only, it said, adding that they would be allowed to appear for their clients in international commercial arbitration.

"Experience and facts show that MNCs and foreign commercial entities, in case of International Commercial Arbitration, don't prefer India as a venue of arbitration proceedings, because they are not allowed to bring lawyers and law firms from their own countries to advise them in International Commercial Arbitration Proceedings, thus, making them to prefer London, Singapore, Paris, etc. as the venue for arbitration proceedings,” the statement said.

The BCI rules will now encourage India being preferred as a venue for such international arbitration proceedings, thus helping India become a hub of international commercial arbitration, it said.

“The BCI stands committed to protect and safeguard interest and welfare of advocates in the country and requests the entire advocate fraternity to welcome these rules in national interest,” it said.

The BCI rules should not be misconstrued to allow any non-lawyer or any BPO or agent to come here and start practising in any field of law, the statement said.

Moreover reciprocity is the very essence of the rule, which may be kept in mind, it added.

"There's A Limit": Eknath Shinde's Scathing Attack On Uddhav Thackeray

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday launched a scathing attack on Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray accusing him of attempting to destroy the careers of leaders of his own party.

Addressing a rally at Khed in Ratnagiri district from the same venue where Mr Thackeray had addressed a gathering a fortnight ago, Mr Shinde said he was the true inheritor of the legacy of Bal Thackeray, founder of Shiv Sena.

The Election Commission recently recognised the faction led by Mr Shinde as the Shiv Sena and allotted it the "bow and arrow" poll symbol.

Mr Shinde, whose coup against Uddhav Thackeray had split the Shiv Sena last year and toppled the MVA government led by Mr Thackeray, said he had never seen a leader who conspires with other political parties to destroy the political careers of his own people.

He took the names of Raj Thackeray (MNS chief) and Narayan Rane among others, who had quit Shiv Sena a long time ago.

''How will the party grow in such a situation? I am not 'gaddar' (traitor) but 'khuddar' (a self-respecting person). Uddhav Thackeray doesn't have the right to call us traitors," he said.

Senior leaders like Gajanan Kirtikar, Ramdas Kadam and others had worked shoulder to shoulder with Balasaheb to strengthen the Shiv Sena, but you call them traitors. "There is a limit to exercise restrain,'' Mr Shinde added.

"I am not a chief minister who gives orders sitting at home but I believe in going to the field during the time of crisis. I was infected with the coronavirus twice. I have always worked on the field, but you call me a traitor,'' he said targetting Mr Thackeray.

Mr Thackeray was accused by the Opposition BJP and the Shinde camp of running the government from the comfort of his private residence in Mumbai during his tenure as the chief minister when the pandemic had wreaked havoc.

"Uddhav Thackeray may be the heir to Balasaheb Thackeray's wealth but not to the ideology which he has mortgaged to the Congress and the NCP to become the chief minister (in November 2019). I am the inheritor of Balasaheb's ideology and legacy," Mr Shinde said.

He said Uddhav Thackeray should know that Balasaheb was much bigger than just being his (Uddhav's) father and he should stop harping on the same to gain "sympathy".

"I don't want your wealth. Balasaheb may be your father but don't keep harping on that to gain sympathy. Balasaheb was much bigger than just being your father,'' Mr Shinde charged.

He also targeted the Congress party and said Shiv Sainiks need to choose between Rahul Gandhi "who can't win state elections and cannot take responsibility for his party and the nationalist and patriotic prime minister Narendra Modi".

Reporters Must Not Become Activists With "Vested Interests": Minister

The news reporters must not become activists with vested interests, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said on Sunday as he called for showing the brighter side of the government which had taken many historical decisions for public good.

He also said under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the COVID-19 adversity turned into an opportunity as world's first DNA vaccine and nasal vaccine for the coronavirus was indigenously developed bolstering India as a vaccine development and manufacturing centre.

The Minister of State in the Prime Minister's office was speaking at two separate functions.

"The media must show the brighter side of the government like the DoNER model of development in the North-East which has changed the development paradigms of the region, the 'StartUp Stand-up' revolution, historical decision of abolishing interviews for non-gazetted posts and the deep sea mission under the leadership of Modi," said Mr Singh, a former minister of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).

"The socio-economic reforms made by this government like the family pension to the divorce daughter, family pension to the families of missing government employees especially in J&K and North East and the digital life certificate must be brought to the public by the media so that information is disseminated to the deserving," he said at the launch of J&K chapter of Public Relations Society of India (PRSI).

He said the reporters must not become activists with vested interests as biases can creep in making news not newsworthy.

"Communication is emerging now as an institution and it becomes the responsibility of PRSI to place the institution above the individual for the welfare of the people," the minister said.

He said the greater responsibility of PRSI is to fill the gaps in government communication in such a manner that the people are informed by the media according to the development communication models.

Calling Modi as the "best communicator in the world", Mr Singh said he has initiated new areas, laid the foundation of unexplored areas which were never in news, the best example being the 'Swachhta'.

Attending Medicos Meet 'Celebrating the Multi-faceted', he said under Modi, the COVID-19 adversity turned into an opportunity in India when world's first DNA vaccine and nasal vaccine for coronavirus was indigenously developed in India which has not only strengthened 'AtmaNirbhar Bharat' but also bolstered India's status as a worldwide vaccine development and manufacturing centre.

On the occasion, the latest 2023 edition of the RSSDI Text Book of Diabetes Mellitus for postgraduate students was released. The book has the foreword and an exclusive chapter by Mr Singh, who is also a nationally known diabetologist and Professor of Diabetes and Medicine.

"The path breaking decisions by the Modi-led government will be written in the golden words in history not done from the last 70 years, be that the done away with the attestation by a gazetted officer," he said.

3 Drown While Crossing Madhya Pradesh River On Way To Temple, 5 Missing

Two persons drowned and five went missing in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district while crossing the Chambal river on their way to a temple in Rajasthan on Saturday morning, officials said.

The rescuers fished out three bodies from the river, but one of them remained unidentified and as per the survivors was not a part of their group of 17.

"Two bodies have been identified. Another could not be identified,” Morena district collector Ankit Asthana told PTI in the evening.

The incident took place around 7 am when a group of 17 devotees from MP's Shivpuri district, heading for a temple fair in the neighbouring state, was crossing the river on foot thinking that water was shallow, a police officer said.

They were swept away by a strong current of water but ten of them swam to safety, said inspector Dharmendra Malviya of Tentra police station in Morena district.

Seven of the survivors reached the river bank on the Rajasthan side and three reached the MP side.

Two persons from the group -- Devkinandan (50) and Kallo Bai, a woman (45) -- drowned, while five others were still missing.

The rescuers also found another body which could not be identified as its face had been badly damaged, possibly bitten by crocodiles, officials said.

Cheyun Kushwaha, one of the survivors, told reporters that this person did not belong to their group.

Rukmani (24), Luvkush Singh (12), Brajmohan (17), Alopa Bai (45) and Rashmi (19) were missing and search was on for them till late in the evening, inspector Malviya said.

All of them were from Chilwada village, about 22 km from Shivpuri district headquarters, and heading for Kaila Devi Mandir in neighbouring Karauli district of Rajasthan.

Police and rescuers from Rajasthan too were looking for the missing persons, officials said.
