A day after results of the urban local body polls in Uttar Pradesh were announced, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati Sunday accused the ruling BJP of misusing government machinery, and said her party will not sit silently over it. Refuting the allegations, spokesperson of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh Harishchandra Srivastava hit out at the BSP leader and said she is refusing to accept the truth that her party has been rejected by the people. Eight Congress turncoats who joined the BJP and helped it form the government in 2019, lost in the May 10 Karnataka Assembly elections, for which the results were announced on Saturday. As many as 13 Congress and three JD(S) MLAs had resigned from the Karnataka Assembly in 2019 thus bringing down the 14-month-old coalition government of the Congress and the JD(S) led by H D Kumaraswamy. Later, 16 of these MLAs, who were disqualified by the Speaker, joined the BJP and a majority them contested the 2019 Assembly bypolls, won the election and became Ministers in the B S Yediyurappa-led BJP government. उत्तर प्रदेश के शाहजहांपुर नगर निगम के चुनाव में भारतीय जनता पार्टी (BJP) की 48 वर्षीय अर्चना वर्मा 30 हजार से अधिक मतों से चुनाव जीतकर यहां की पहली महापौर (Mayor) बन गई हैं. शाहजहांपुर को नगर निगम का दर्जा मिलने के बाद यहां पहली बार चुनाव हुआ है.  यूपी में 2017 में नगर निकाय चुनाव होने के एक साल बाद भारतीय जनता पार्टी की सरकार ने 2018 में शाहजहांपुर को नगर निगम का दर्जा दिया था. यह सीट अन्य पिछड़ा वर्ग की महिला उम्मीदवार के लिए आरक्षित की गई थी. राज्य निर्वाचन आयोग के अनुसार अर्चना वर्मा को 80,762 वोट (49.5 फीसदी) मिले, जबकि कांग्रेस की 63 वर्षीय निकहत इकबाल को 50,484 (30.94 फीसदी) वोट मिले. समाजवादी पार्टी की माला राठौड़ को 20,155 वोट (12.35 फीसदी) से ही संतोष करना पड़ा. यहां कुल आठ प्रत्याशी चुनावी मैदान में थे. आयोग ने बताया कि नोटा का वोट शेयर 0.82 प्रतिशत रहा. शाहजहांपुर के महापौर चुनाव के परिणाम महत्वपूर्ण हैं क्योंकि सपा ने शुरू में अर्चना वर्मा को अपना उम्मीदवार घोषित किया था, लेकिन बाद में वह भाजपा में शामिल हो गईं. शाहजहांपुर निर्वाचन क्षेत्र पर इसलिए भी सबकी निगाह...

JD(S) second-in-command and two-time chief minister HD Kumaraswamy won the Channapatna seat in Karnataka's Ramanagara district for the sixth time on Saturday. HD Kumaraswamy received 96,592 votes against 80,677 polled by his BJP rival CP Yogeshwar. Congress candidate Gangadhar S finished third with 15,374 votes, according to the Election Commission website. Mr Kumaraswamy had also contested elections from Channapatna, known for wooden toys, instead of Ramanagara in 2018 against local strongman Yogeshwara. The JD(S) leader won by a margin of 21,530 votes. Mr Yogeshwara has represented the constituency five times since 1999 as an Independent, and as a candidate of Congress, BJP and Samajwadi Party. Both Mr Yogeshwara and Mr Kumaraswamy belong to the dominant Vokkaliga community in the region.
