Delhi Reports 1,634 Covid Cases, Positivity Rate At 29.68%

Delhi on Sunday logged 1,634 Covid-19 cases with a positivity rate of 29.68 per cent, according to data shared by the city government's health department.

With the new cases, Delhi's Covid-19 tally climbed to 20,23,227. Three fresh fatalities pushed the death count to 26,563, the health department bulletin stated.

Of the latest fatalities, Covid-19 was the primary cause of death in one of the cases, it stated.

According to the bulletin, the fresh cases emerged out of 5,505 tests conducted the previous day.

On Saturday, Delhi had recorded 1,396 Covid-19 cases with a positivity rate of 31.9 per cent -- the highest in 15 months.

The capital saw a positivity rate of 30.6 per cent on January 14 last year.

The department did not issue a bulletin on Friday.

Delhi reported 1,527 Covid-19 cases with a positivity rate of 27.77 per cent on Thursday, and two deaths.

The national capital's daily tally of Covid-19 cases crossed 1,000 for the first time in more than seven months on Wednesday, while the positivity rate stood at 23.8 per cent.

Delhi had recorded 1,964 cases on August 18 last year.

The number of Covid-19 cases had dropped to zero on January 16 for the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic. However, the city has witnessed a spurt in cases over the last fortnight.

The health department bulletin on Sunday said 270 of 7,951 beds in Delhi's dedicated Covid-19 hospitals are occupied, while 3,393 patients are in home isolation.

The number of active cases currently stands at 5,297, it said.

Mock drills were conducted at Delhi hospitals on April 11 to ascertain their preparedness to tackle Covid-19.

Medical experts have said Omicron sub-variant XBB.1.16 could be driving the surge in cases in the city.

However, they maintained that there is no need to panic and people should follow Covid-appropriate behaviour and get their booster shots.

Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj had said last week that XBB.1.16 is not leading to severe infection among children.

3 Arrested, Say Police After Atiq Ahmed, Brother Shot Dead

As many as three people were arrested, informed police after mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj on Saturday.

"Three people have been arrested. Further details are to be shared later," said an officer after the gangster-turned-politician and his brother were shot dead in Prayagraj.

Moments before their killing, both criminals, who were accused in the Umesh Pal murder case, were speaking to the media while being taken for a medical and their murder was captured on camera.

"Nahi le gaye to nahi gaye (they did not take us, so we did not go)" were Atiq Ahmed's last words, when asked what did he have to say on not being taken to his son Asad's funeral.

"Main baat ye hai ki Guddu Muslim.... (the thing is that Guddu Muslim...) were Ashraf's last words.

According to visuals, both were handcuffed and taken for medical. As both proceeded, they answered questions by the mediapersons. Atiq was shot in the head from behind, nearly at point-blank range. Ashraf, too, was shot dead.

Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said that crime has reached its peak in the state and the morale of the "criminals" has grown by leaps and bounds.

"Crime has reached its peak in UP and the morale of the criminals is high. When someone can be killed openly despite being surrounded by a security cordon, one can imagine the state of the general public. Due to this (alleged encounter killings), an ambience of fear is being created among the public. It seems that some people are deliberately creating such an ambience," tweeted Akhilesh Yadav in Hindi.

Days after Atiq Ahmed's son Asad was killed in an encounter in Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi, the mafia-turned-politician and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were killed on Saturday while being taken for a medical in Prayagraj.

Atiq Ahmed was accused in the 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case and also in the Umesh Pal murder case which happened in February this year.

Asad was killed on April 13 in an encounter in Jhansi. He was killed along with Ghulam, both of whom were wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case of Prayagraj. Each of them carried a reward of Rs 5 lakhs on their heads. The police said that foreign-made weapons were recovered.

"Asad, son of mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and Ghulam S/o Maksudan, both wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case of Prayagraj and carrying a reward of Rupees five lakhs each; killed in an encounter with the UPSTF team led by DySP Navendu and DySP Vimal at Jhansi. Sophisticated foreign-made weapons recovered," UP STF said.

Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were brought to the CJM Court in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh on the same day Asad was killed in the encounter.

Rajasthan Nurse Dies By Suicide, Family Alleges Murder By Colleague

A woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in her room in Jodhpur, police said on Saturday.

However, the family of Renu Meena, 32, who hailed from Kota and was posted as a nurse at the Radiology Department of MDM Hospital for the past three years, alleged she was murdered by a male nurse who stayed in a room near hers and hanged her body to make it look like a suicide.

Station House Officer (SHO), Shastri Nagar, Jogendra Singh said the police received information on Friday night that a nurse had committed suicide in her room.

"When we reached the spot, the woman's body was lying on a bed," he said, adding post-mortem examination was conducted by a medical board.

Prima facie, it is a case of suicide. No injury mark was found on her body and no suicide note was found in her room, Mr Singh said.

According to preliminary investigation, Meena was administered some psychotropic injections before she died, the police said.

The woman's family members, however, alleged she was killed by a male nurse and he later hanged her body from the fan to make it look like a suicide.

The male nurse claimed he broke a wall to enter Meena's room as he suspected something wasn't right and found her hanging from the ceiling fan.

He claimed he immediately took her body down and informed the hospital staff and police about the incident.

A case has been filed on the basis of a complaint lodged by Meena's family members and an investigation is underway, the police said.
