Satellite Spectrum To Be Assigned Administratively: Jyotiraditya Scindia

Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia on Thursday in Parliament made it clear that satellite spectrum would be allocated administratively rather than through auction, aligning with global practices.

"We cannot auction an asset which is not fully in our control. This applies not only to India but all countries on earth," Jyotiraditya Scindia said, explaining the technical differences between mobile and satellite communications.

During the Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha, the minister elucidated that mobile technology operates on low-frequency waves that dissipate in the atmosphere, necessitating spectrum auctions to prevent signal interference. In contrast, satellite communications use higher frequencies transmitted directly like a laser through fixed antennas.

"Today, there is no country that auctions satellite spectrum across the world. The USA's Orbit Act prohibits the auction of satellite spectrum. In Europe, France, Germany - all countries assign satellite spectrum administratively. India is only following the global norm, " he stated.

Jyotiraditya Scindia added that the pricing of the spectrum would be determined by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), to whom the government has given a reference.

"Once TRAI defines that price, spectrum will be allocated to all providers without discrimination," he said.

The International Telecommunication Union assigns satellite orbits and frequencies, with individual countries only controlling usage within their territories, the minister pointed out.

The minister was replying to a query asked by Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala.

Lalu Prasad Yadav Admitted To AIIMS-Delhi For Treatment

RJD president and former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad was on Wednesday admitted to AIIMS in Delhi for treatment, sources said.

The 76-year-old leader has been admitted to the Cardio Critical Care Unit of the Cardio-Neuro Centre under Dr Rakesh Yadav, Professor of Cardiology at AIIMS, they said.

A team of doctors is monitoring his condition, the sources said.

He was brought to AIIMS for treatment at around 9.35 pm after being admitted to a hospital in Patna for a brief period.

Talking to reporters in Patna, his son and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said Prasad had developed sores on his back and an arm, which he hopes to get operated upon in Delhi.

"Lalu ji had reached the airport in the afternoon to board his flight for Delhi. My mother Rabri Devi is accompanying him. A sudden drop in blood pressure was noted following which we rushed him to the Paras Hospital," the former deputy chief minister said.

According to Prakash Sinha, who led the team of doctors treating Prasad, "He was kept in the emergency ward where his condition improved after intravenous therapy. He wanted to know if he could go to Delhi in an air ambulance. We asked him to go ahead." Yadav, who is the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, said, "My father is a man of courage. He chose to travel by a normal flight".

The young leader, however, admitted that the family was concerned about the ailing septuagenarian, who has been a diabetic for many years and has also undergone heart surgery and a kidney transplant.

Prasad was convicted in fodder scam cases and has been out on bail for several years on health grounds.

Jaguar Fighter Jet Crashes In Gujarat, 1 Pilot Ejects, Search On For Another

A Jaguar fighter jet of the Indian Air Force has crashed in Gujarat's Jamnagar. One pilot has ejected and a search is on for the other.

"While one pilot safely ejected before the crash, another one is still missing. The aircraft caught fire after the crash landing. Police and firefighters have rushed to the spot and started searching for the missing pilot," news agency PTI quoted Superintendent of Police Premsukh Delu as saying.

Videos from the spot, in Suvarda village, 12 km from Jamnagar city, showed what appeared to be a field on fire with the cockpit of the crashed plane and its tail - which can be seen lying in different areas - also burning.

Indian Air Force (IAF) officials said the twin-seater Jaguar was on a routine training sortie when it crashed in.

The Jaguar is a twin-engine fighter bomber, with single and twin-seat variants, which is very widely used in the IAF. First inducted in the late 70s, it has been heavily upgraded over the years.

Petition Filed In High Court To Stop Justice Yashwant Varma From Taking Oath

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed before the Allahabad High Court's Lucknow bench on Wednesday seeking a directive to its Chief Justice to refrain from administering the oath to Justice Yashwant Varma, court sources said.

The PIL cited the ongoing in-house inquiry ordered by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) into the recovery of "four to five semi-burnt sacks" of Indian currency notes from the residence of Justice Varma following after a fire incident last month.

Justice Varma was recently transferred from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court in the midst of the cash stash row.

The PIL, filed by Vikash Chaturvedi, is expected to be heard on April 4, the sources said.

Advocate Ashok Pandey, representing Chaturvedi, argued that since the CJI has reportedly "directed the Allahabad High Court Chief Justice not to assign any judicial work to Justice Varma during the ongoing inquiry, there is no justification for proceeding with the oath ceremony".

The petitioner has also challenged the central government's notification dated March 28, 2025, which accepted the Supreme Court collegium's recommendation to transfer Justice Varma to the Allahabad High Court.

Halt Ops In 6 Weeks: High Court To Rapido, Other Bike Taxi Apps In Karnataka

The High Court of Karnataka has issued a strict directive to the state government to take necessary steps to suspend bike taxis within six weeks.

Uber India Systems Pvt Ltd, ANI Technologies Pvt Ltd (Ola) and others have applied for directions to the state government to consider the applications filed in 2022 for converting two-wheelers into transport vehicles.

All these applications have been filed by High Court Justice BM Shyam Prasad, who has dismissed them and issued a strict notice to Ola, Uber, and Rapido to halt the operations of their bike taxis.

The High Court ruled that the state government could not issue permission in this regard.

During the hearing of the petitions, the court noted that Ola, Uber, and Rapido were managing bike taxis based on an interim order issued by the court. It was allowed to work for six weeks and was supposed to be banned six weeks later.

The court also said that the state government should ensure this. Applicants cannot act as collectors of bike taxi services unless the state government provides the relevant guidelines under Section 93 of the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988 and the rules governing it, and a two-wheeler is registered with white number plates by the Karnataka Motor Vehicle Rules.

The state government has argued that bike taxis are illegal because they cannot operate as commercial vehicles. Considering this, the court has ordered that it is not possible.

Tamil Nadu Court Grants Transit Anticipatory Bail To Kunal Kamra

Comedian Kunal Kamra, who recently faced legal trouble over a joke directed at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has been granted transit anticipatory bail by the District Munsif-cum-Judicial Magistrate Court in Vanur, Tamil Nadu.

Kunal Kamra had approached the Madras High Court on Tuesday, seeking transit anticipatory bail, which provides temporary protection from arrest in a jurisdiction different from where the FIR has been filed.

In his case, the FIR was lodged by Khar Police in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The Madras High Court, in an earlier hearing, had granted Kunal Kamra interim protection from arrest till April 7.

Justice Sundar Mohan directed the comedian to appear before the Vanur court to formally secure his bail. Following this direction, the Vanur court granted the requested relief.

The case stems from a stand-up performance Kunal Kamra delivered on March 23 at the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai's Khar area.

During the show, he parodied a song from the 1997 Bollywood film 'Dil Toh Pagal Hai', using it to make a satirical reference to Shinde. Though he did not name the Deputy Chief Minister directly, Kunal Kamra referred to him as a "gaddar" (traitor), a term that sparked political backlash.

Following the performance, Shiv Sena workers vandalised the venue in protest. A few days later, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) initiated demolition work on parts of the comedy club, drawing further public attention to the incident.

Multiple officers from Mumbai Police reportedly visited Kunal Kamra's registered address in the city after he failed to appear for questioning.

Kunal Kamra, however, criticised the move, stating that he had not lived at that address for over a decade. He called the police action a "waste of time and public resources."

Appearing through his lawyer, Kunal Kamra told the court that his performance had no malicious intent and that he had not directly criticised any individual.

His lawyer argued that there was no hidden agenda in his remarks and alleged that the police were attempting to arrest him without due cause.

Kunal Kamra has maintained that making jokes about political leaders is not a crime.

"Your inability to take a joke at the expense of a powerful public figure does not change the nature of my right," he said in a public statement.

He also reportedly told the police that he would not apologise for his comments.

The Madras High Court has now ordered Kunal Kamra to appear before it on April 7 for further proceedings regarding the conditions of his bail.

The Vanur court, which granted the comedian temporary relief, is located in Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu.
