Pilot Detects Fuel Leak During Final Pre-Flight Inspection, Averts Tragedy

A potential tragedy was averted at the Chennai Airport on Wednesday when the pilot of an Air India flight travelling from Chennai to Singapore detected a possible fuel leak during the final pre-flight inspection.

The flight, carrying 145 passengers including crew members, was scheduled to fly on Wednesday noon.

However, during the final checks, the pilot noticed the technical issue and immediately alerted Air Traffic Control (ATC).

Engineers and airport authorities promptly attended to the problem, and the malfunction was rectified.

Once receiving clearance, the flight departed safely.

In a separate development, seven departure flights and five arrival flights were cancelled at Chennai Airport on the same day due to various reasons.

Flights departing to Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Madurai, Shimoga, Bagdogra, Jaffna, and Kolkata were affected.

Arrivals from Thiruvananthapuram, Madurai, Kochi, Kolkata, and Jaffna were also cancelled.

Airport officials reported that eight flights were cancelled due to operational reasons, while two faced technical issues.

Poor weather conditions in Jaffna led to the cancellation of the departure and arrival flights on that route.

Additionally, one flight from New Delhi to Chennai was diverted to Bengaluru after rain briefly disrupted operations on Wednesday morning.

The New Delhi flight, scheduled to arrive at 10 a.m., could not do so due to adverse weather.

This latest incident adds to a series of aviation challenges in the Chennai airport.

A SpiceJet flight from Chennai to Kochi made an emergency return to Chennai Airport on Monday (December 9) morning after encountering a technical glitch mid-air.

The flight, which had 117 passengers onboard, flew at 6:30 a.m. and safely returned at 7:15 a.m.

During adverse weather conditions caused by Cyclone Fengal, an IndiGo Airbus A320 narrowly avoided a mishap.

While attempting to land at Chennai Airport, the pilot aborted the landing just inches from the ground and performed a go-round.

A flight scheduled to arrive in Thoothukudi was diverted to Madurai due to technical issues.

After circling briefly, the aircraft made a safe emergency landing in Madurai.

Among the 77 passengers was Tamil Nadu's Public Works Minister, E.V. Velu.

Recently, an Air India Express flight from Kuwait to Chennai returned to Kuwait due to a mid-air technical snag.

The flight, with 154 passengers onboard, was cancelled after the issue persisted.

Passengers were accommodated in Kuwait.

Person Faking Sexual Identity Jailed For 20 Years For Raping Girl: UP Cops

A local court in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly sentenced a 22-year-old person, who faked his sexual identity, to 20 years imprisonment for raping a minor girl, a police officer said on Tuesday.

Superintendent of Police (City) Bareilly Manush Pareek said initially the accused had claimed to be a female transgender, but a medical examination conducted at the SGPGI Lucknow, as per court orders, revealed the accused as biologically male.

The incident occurred in the Mirganj area in August last year. Farin Kinar allegedly lured the survivor on the pretext of watching TV and committed the crime. He also allegedly threatened to harm her if she disclosed the incident, the officer said.

"Hearing the case on Monday, Special Judge POCSO Court-3 Umashankar Khar found Farin guilty. The court considered the medical examination report and witness statements. Farin was sentenced to 20 years rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 12,000," the officer said.

The court ordered that the fine amount be given to the victim, he said.

Farin's counsel had claimed that Farin was transgender, wore women's clothes and was "incapable of committing rape".

"What Is Sauce For Goose...": Supreme Court Win For Woman Army Officer

The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Union government to grant permanent commission to a woman officer who was denied benefits given to similarly placed officers, observing "What is sauce for the goose ought to be sauce for the gander." 

Granting relief to the officer, who is posted as Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Dental Corps at Agra, a bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan held that she was wrongly excluded from consideration when other similarly situated officers were considered and granted permanent commission.

Noting that the officer had a distinguished service, the bench exercised its plenary powers under Article 142 of the Constitution and directed the grant of permanent commission to her.

The bench also observed that thoughts on conditions of service and job perquisites would be last in the minds of valiant Indian soldiers bravely guarding the frontiers at Siachen glacier or in other difficult terrains.

"Will it be fair to tell them that they will not be given relief even if they are similarly situated, since the judgment they seek to rely on, was passed in the case of certain applicants alone who moved the court? We think that would be a very unfair scenario." "The appellant's case is founded on the principle of discrimination. What is sauce for the goose ought to be sauce for the gander," the court said to drive home the point that rules and standards should be applied consistently and without bias.

The court said accepting the stand of the respondents in this case would result in the apex court putting its imprimatur(approval) on an "unreasonable stand" adopted by the authorities.

It noted that the woman officer had been continuously working since 2007 and was awarded the commendation card by the Chief of Army Staff in January 2019.

"We hold that the appellant was wrongly excluded from consideration when other similarly situated officers were considered and granted permanent commission." The court further said its directions be implemented within four weeks and all consequential benefits like seniority, promotion and monetary benefits, including arrears be extended to the appellant.

The court delivered its verdict on an appeal filed by the woman officer challenging a January, 2022 order of the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) Regional Bench, Lucknow.

"We direct that the appellant's case be taken up for grant of permanent commission and she be extended the benefit of permanent commission with effect from the same date the similarly situated persons who obtained benefits pursuant to the judgment dated January 22, 2014... of the Principal Bench of the AFT." She moved the top court challenging the January, 2022 order declining her prayer for reliefs similar to the ones granted by the January, 2014 verdict of the AFT principal bench.

The bench noted that in March 2008, she was commissioned as a short service commissioned officer in the Army Dental Corps and the regulation, as it then stood, entitled her to three chances for taking up the departmental examination for permanent commission.

It further noted the regulation also provided extension of age limit.

The bench said on March 20, 2013, amendments were carried out as a result of which the officer was deprived of her third chance since the extension was capped at 35 years and was confined to those who were in receipt of PG qualification of Masters in Dental Surgery on and from March 20, 2013.

The woman officer informed the bench that similarly-placed officers, who were also not given an opportunity to appear for the clinical test and interview in view of the amendment, moved applications before the AFT principal bench.

The bench noted though the amendments to the policy were upheld, the AFT principal bench allowed the reliefs, including grant of one-time age relaxation in favour of the petitioners for seeking permanent absorption.

The woman officer said she could not join the applicants in the litigation at that time as she was in her advance stage of pregnancy.

The bench noted that consequent to the order of the AFT principal bench, permanent commissions were granted to officers eligible prior to the amendment to avail a third chance but could not avail in view of the March 20, 2013 amendment.

It noted that the woman officer was not considered because she was not part of the original application filed before the AFT principal bench.

"While the AFT principal bench granted relief to the petitioners, it did not prohibit the department from considering similarly-situated persons." The bench said it was a well-settled principle of law that when a citizen aggrieved by an action of the government department approached the court and obtained a declaration of law in their favour, other similarly-placed persons ought to be extended the benefit without the need for them to go to court.

"Having considered the submissions of the counsel and perused the records, we are of the opinion that the appellant is entitled to parity with those applicants who succeeded before the AFT, Principal Bench." The bench further said the authorities on their own should have extended the benefit of the judgment of AFT principal bench to the appellant

मध्य पूर्व में एक बड़े तख्ता पलट के तहत सीरिया में इस्लामी विद्रोहियों ने दमिश्क पर नियंत्रण करने के बाद रविवार को राष्ट्रपति बशर अल-असद को पद से हटाने की घोषणा कर दी. इससे असद को भागने पर मजबूर होना पड़ा. करीब 13 साल से अधिक समय तक चले गृहयुद्ध के बाद असद के परिवार के दशकों के शासन का अंत हो गया. बशर अल-असद का पतन क्षेत्र में बड़ा प्रभाव रखने वाले रूस और ईरान के लिए एक बड़ा झटका है. यह दोनों असद के ऐसे प्रमुख सहयोगी हैं जिन्होंने संघर्ष में महत्वपूर्ण दौर में उनका समर्थन किया था.

ईरान ने सालों से सीरिया का इस्तेमाल मुख्य रूप से सुन्नी राष्ट्र में तैनात प्रॉक्सी ग्रुपों के जरिए अपने क्षेत्रीय प्रभाव का विस्तार करने के लिए किया है. तेहरान ने अपने प्रॉक्सी हिजबुल्लाह के साथ मिलकर सीरियाई सरकारी बलों को खोए हुए क्षेत्र को वापस पाने में मदद की है. इस्लामिक रिपब्लिक ने असद की सेना को सलाह देने के लिए अपने इस्लामिक रिवोल्यूशनरी गार्ड कॉर्प्स (IRGC) कमांडरों को भी भेजा, जो राष्ट्रपति को सत्ता में बनाए रखने में मददगार साबित हुए.

Man Gives Wife 'Triple Talaq' For Praising Cops' Action In Sambhal

She was watching a video on Sambhal violence in Uttar Pradesh, where protests sparked by a survey into whether a centuries-old mosque was built on a Hindu temple had killed four people - when her husband asked her not to and then, as she claims, divorced her by uttering the word 'talaq' three times. She had praised the police action.

"Koi wajah hi toh nahi thi. Bina wajah ke talaq diya hai (There was no reason at all. He divorced me without a reason)," said Nida, who uses a single name.

The word 'talaq' means divorce in Arabic.

The controversial practice of 'triple talaq' that allows Muslim men to divorce their wives instantly by saying 'talaq' thrice was banned by the Supreme Court in 2017. The top court called it "unconstitutional". In 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government also approved a bill outlawing the centuries-old right of a Muslim man to instantly divorce his wife.

Nida, a native of Moradabad, has filed a police complaint against her husband, Ejazul, for divorcing her.

"I was watching a video because I had to visit Sambhal for a wedding. I also had some personal work. So I was checking if it was safe to go there. My husband asked me why I was watching the video. I said what is wrong is wrong. Everyone has the right to defend themselves," said Nida, elaborating on what started the fight between the couple.

"Upon hearing this, he said you are not a Muslim; you are an infidel. You support police. He started misbehaving with me. He said I will not keep you anymore, no matter what you do and pronounced triple talaq. He then said he has nothing to do with me," Nida, dressed in a black burqa, told reporters.

The couple was in the third year of their marriage. 

"A woman has filed a complaint against her husband that she was watching a YouTube video related to Sambhal, which led to a fight between the couple. The husband asked her not to watch the video and when she did not agree, he ended the marriage by saying talaq three times," said Ranvijay Singh, Superintendent of City Police, Moradabad.

The situation had been tense in Sambhal since a survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid was conducted on November 19 following orders from a court that came on a petition claiming that a Harihar temple existed at the site earlier.

Violence broke out on November 24 when the mosque was being surveyed again. Four people were killed and others injured in a clash between protesters and police. A total of 29 police personnel were injured in the incident, said the police.

छत्तीसगढ़ के कांकेर के पोलिंग ऑफिसर टिकेश कुमार साहू ने नक्सल प्रभावित इलाके में मतदान कराया था. अपना एक्सपीरिएंस शेयर करते हुए साहू बताते हैं, "छत्तीसगढ़ के बस्तर डिवीजन में 102 गांव ऐसे हैं, जहां आजादी के बाद लोगों ने पहली बार अपने ही गांव में मतदान किया था. नक्सल प्रभावित क्षेत्र में मतदान कराना बहुत चुनौतीपूर्ण होता है. हमें मतदान के दिन से तीन दिन पहले घर से निकलना पड़ा था."

71 प्रतिशत वोटिंग कराई
उन्होंने आगे बताया, "हेलिकॉप्टर से हमें BSF कैंप में ड्रॉप किया गया. फिर 5 किलोमीटर घने जंगलों में से चलते हुए हम पोलिंग बूथ पर पहुंचे थे. जब हम रास्ते में थे, तो नक्सलियों के ड्रोन हम पर नजर रख रहे थे. हमारे साथ काफी सुरक्षा व्यवस्था थी, इसलिए हम 71 प्रतिशत वोटिंग कराकर सकुशल वापस आ गए."  

तमिलनाडु के दक्षिण चेन्नई के वालाचेरी विधानसभा क्षेत्र की ट्रांसजेंडर पोलिंग अधिकारी एम राधा, झारखंड के पलामू की चुनाव अधिकारी अनीता मिंज, जम्मू कश्मीर के खान साहिब विधानसभा क्षेत्र की राहिला सैयल रफीकी, जम्मू कश्मीर के पोलिंग स्टेशन लुसाने के चुनाव अधिकारी सूरज सिंह, अंडमान और निकोबार के पोलिंग अधिकारी टी रामाराव, छत्तीसगढ़ के कांकेर के पोलिंग आफिसर टिकेश कुमार साहू और अरुणाचल प्रदेश के इटानगर की पोलिंग अधिकारी डॉ चिलो लिमा को 'NDTV इंडियन ऑफ द ईयर अवॉर्ड' दिया गया है.

ट्रैक्टर में बैठकर नदी पार करके पहुंचे थे पोलिंग बूथ-अनीता मिंज 
झारखंड के पलामू की चुनाव अधिकारी अनीता मिंज ने नक्सल प्रभावित इलाके में ड्यूटी की. वहां चुनाव कराना मुश्किल काम था. NDTV के इवेंट में अनीता मिंज कहती हैं, "मैंने लोगों को चुनाव के विषय में बताया. उन्हें बताया कि वोट देना हमारा बड़ा अधिकार है. मैंने उन्हें पोलिंग बूथ तक और वोट डालने के लिए प्रेरित किया. पोलिंग बूथ 20 किलोमीटर दूर था. वहां कच्ची सड़कों से होकर जाना पड़ता था. रास्ते में एक नदी भी पार करनी पड़ती है. हमारी टीम ने ट्रैक्टर में बैठकर नदी पार की और बूथ तक गए. वहां चुनाव कराए."           

ट्रांसजेंडर पोलिंग ऑफिसर एम राधा ने बताया एक्सपीरियंस
'NDTV इंडियन ऑफ द ईयर अवॉर्ड' से सम्मानित ट्रांसजेंडर पोलिंग ऑफिसर ने इस दौरान अपने अनुभव शेयर किए. एम राधा तमिलनाडु की राजधानी चेन्नई की ट्रांसजेंडर पोलिंग ऑफिसर हैं. उन्होंने कहा, "मैं चेन्नई में सोशल वेलफेयर डिपार्टमेंट में काम करती हूं. लोकतंत्र की सफलता वोट और वोटर की समावेशिता है. संविधान में ट्रांसजेंडर सहित समाज के सभी वर्गों को वोटिंग का अधिकार प्राप्त है. हमें इसे बढ़ावा देना चाहिए."  

पहली बार देश की सेवा करने का मिला मौका-राहिला सैयल रफीकी 
जम्मू कश्मीर के खान साहिब विधानसभा क्षेत्र की राहिला सैयल रफीकी ने बताया कि जम्मू-कश्मीर में चुनाव कराना कितना कठिन था. उन्होंने कहा कि वास्तव में यह मेरे लिए बड़ी चुनौती थी. यह पहला मौका था जब मुझे देश की यह सेवा करने का अवसर मिला. उन्होंने कहा, "वहां सिर्फ महिला कर्मचारियों की ड्यूटी थी. हमने वहां बहुत अच्छे से मैनेज किया. हमने इलाके में लोगों के घर पहुंचकर उन्हें वोट डालने के लिए जागरूक किया. तो सब अच्छे से हो गया."
