"Show Me Discrimination...": S Jaishankar's Dare On Minorities In India

Weighing in on the state of minorities in India, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday dismissed concerns around discrimination on grounds of religion, saying everything has become fairer.

Speaking at an event in Washington DC on Friday, S Jaishankar said, "Today, since you brought up the issue of minorities in India, what is the test really of fair and good governance or of the balance of a society? It would be whether in terms of the amenities, the benefits, the access, the rights, you discriminate or not, and in every society in the world, at some point, there's been some discrimination on some basis. If you look at India today, it's a society today where there is a tremendous change taking place, the biggest change happening today in India is the creation of a social welfare system in a society that has less than $3,000 per capita income."

On India increasingly asserting itself on the international fora, S Jaishankar said, "Nobody has done that in the world before... Now, when you look at the benefits of that, you look at housing, you look at health, you look at food, you look at finance, you look at educational access, health access."

"I defy you to show me discrimination. In fact, the more digital we have become, the more faceless the governance has become. Actually, it's become fairer," he added.

"But as I said this is a globalised world. There will be people, you will have people gripe about it and much of the griping is political. Let me be very frank with you because we have also had a culture of vote banks and there are sections who had in their own eyes a certain privilege...and it's a phenomenon," S Jaishankar said during an interaction at the Hudson Institute in the US.

Describing India as an absorber of best practices during the event, S Jaishankar hailed the country's success in digital payment saying, "If you are going shopping in India today, you can leave your wallet behind but you can't leave your phone behind, because most likely the person you're buying something from will not accept cash, and will want you to pull out your phone, look at the QR code, and make a cashless payment. Last year we clocked 90 billion cashless financial payments. Just for reference, the US was about three (billion), and China was 17.6 (billion). This year, we probably would exceed. I saw the June figures, it was nine billion transactions in June alone. Street vendors today will have a QR code on their cart and say, just make your payment there."

He also highlighted how India's advocacy of Yoga over the last decade has "improved" global health.

Further, the Minister underscored India's increasing footprints in the global economy and its increasing trade with the Middle East.

"We have to understand today that as India becomes a larger consumer, a bigger economy, our salience in the Middle East countries calculations, especially the Gulf economies, is that much higher. We are the largest trade partner of the UAE and we would be among probably the top three of the Saudis," he said.

Earlier this week, the External Affairs Minister met his UAE counterpart Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the sidelines of the 78th United Nations General Assembly session in New York City. The two appreciated the rapid progress in India, and UAE bilateral cooperation and valued regular exchange of perspectives on regional and global issues.

"Always a pleasure to meet FM @ABZayed of UAE, this time in New York. Appreciate the rapid progress in our bilateral cooperation. Value our regular exchange of perspectives on regional and global issues," S Jaishankar wrote on X.

UAE and India along with Saudi Arabia, the US, and European Union (EU), had recently announced an ambitious infrastructure plan - the 'India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor'. This initiative launched at the G20 summit in New Delhi, seeks to reshape the trade route between the Gulf, Europe, and South Asia, connecting them by rail and sea links.

Other Backward Classes Won't Lose Out: Chief Minister On Maratha Quota

The reservation of Other Backward Classes (OBC) will not be touched while giving quota to the Maratha community, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said on Friday.

During the day, Eknath Shinde held a meeting with representatives of the OBC and Nomadic Tribes at Sahyadri Guest House. It was attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar as well as senior ministers and officials. Representatives from these segments put forth their demands in the meeting.

"The government's stand is that the quota of no community will not be diluted. While giving reservation to the Maratha community, the quota of other communities will remain unaffected," Mr Shinde said.

The government stands firmly behind the Nomadic Tribes, he said, adding that officials have been directed to start 72 hostels for OBC students.

Devendra Fadnavis said the implementation of schemes of Rs 4,000 crore is being done.

Sharad Pawar, who handles the finance department in the Shinde government, said the NT community will be allocated a huge amount of funds in the budget.

Meanwhile, Sachin Rajurkar, general secretary of the Rashtriya OBC Mahasangh, who took part in the meeting, said Mr Fadnavis will go to Chandrapur to persuade Ravindra Tonge to call off his 19-day hunger strike.

Mr Tonge, the head of the students' wing of the Rashtriya OBC Mahasangh, is on hunger strike for various demands and has opposed the inclusion of the Maratha community in the OBC segment for reservation purposes.

Mr Rajurkar claimed Ravindra Tonge will call off his hunger strike on Saturday on the back of assurances from the state government, adding that a 'bandh' call for Chandrapur has been withdrawn.

However, sources from Mr Fadnavis' office just said he is likely to go to Chandrapur on Saturday.

Union Minister Seeks More Transparency In Censor Board Amid Graft Charges

Taking serious note of the corruption allegations in the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur directed officials on Friday to swiftly implement measures to enhance transparency and accountability in the administration of the board.

Mr Thakur directed Information and Broadcasting Secretary Apurva Chandra to ensure maximum utilisation of technology and the rolling out of a faceless system on the lines of the Income Tax Office for slotting of films to be scheduled for screening for certification officials, a senior official said.

The action came in the wake of allegations by Tamil actor Vishal, who claimed that he had to pay Rs 6.5 lakh to the CBFC's Mumbai office for the screening and certification of the Hindi version of his film "Mark Antony".

The official said Anurag Thakur wants the CBFC to speed up the process of creating a transparent mechanism for faster certification of films in urgent cases and further strengthen the oversight measures.

The Minister has sought an action-taken report on the matter by October 16.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting sent an official to Mumbai to probe the matter soon after the actor charges on social media.

Vishal's sci-fi film "Mark Antony", directed by Adhik Ravichandran, was released in Hindi on Thursday. The movie also features SJ Suryah, Ritu Varma, Sunil, Selvaraghavan and Abhinaya.

In a statement, the Indian Film and Television Directors' Association (IFTDA) expressed concern over the allegations made against CBFC officials and demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter.

S Jaishankar Discusses Bilateral Ties With US National Security Advisor

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday met US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and discussed the progress in bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to take it forward.

S Jaishankar, who arrived here from New York on Wednesday after addressing the 78th General Assembly session of the United Nations on Tuesday, will meet US Secretary of State Antony Blinken later in the day.

"Began my Washington DC visit with a meeting with NSA @JakeSullivan46. Recognised the tremendous progress in our bilateral relationship this year and discussed taking it forward," S Jaishankar said in a post on X.

The White House was not immediately available for comments on the meeting.

S Jaishankar will meet Antony Blinken at the Foggy Bottom headquarters of the State Department later in the day. He is also scheduled to meet the US Trade Representatives Katherine Tie.

This is the highest level meeting between the two countries after the recently concluded G-20 summit in New Delhi and amidst India-Canada diplomatic row.

While the meeting between the two top diplomats was scheduled much before the Canadian crisis broke out, the US has been urging India to cooperate in the Canadian investigation into the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has alleged "potential" involvement of the agents of the Indian government in the killing of Nijjar. India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020. India has rejected the allegations as "absurd" and "motivated".

S Jaishankar is also expected to hold a series of meetings with senior officials of the Biden administration, review the progress made between the two countries after the historic State Visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June and talk about other regional and global issues.

The minister is also expected to engage with the India community, and think-tank community and interact with leaders from the corporate sector.

"Bharat Product Of Sanatana Dharma": Tamil Nadu Governor Jabs Stalin Junior

Even as the fury over DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin's rant against Sanatan Dharma is yet to die down, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi on Wednesday said that the successful hosting of the G20 Summit by India, under the theme "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" (One Earth, One Family, One Future), has got the world to acknowledge and celebrate Sanatana Dharma like never before.

In a veiled jibe at the DMK minister, the Governor said Sanatana dharma is "indestructible".

Addressing a conference in Chennai earlier, Udhayanidhi Stalin equated Sanatana dharma with "mosquitoes, dengue, malaria, fever, and Corona" and called for it to be eradicated as opposed to being merely opposed.

"On the 9th and 10th of this month, the world celebrated the 'Sanatana Utsava' in New Delhi as we hosted the G20 Summit. This is because the G20 Summit under Bharat's presidency was done with full commitment to Sanatana values, Sanatana Dharma, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam... Today, the world has begun celebrating Sanatana Dharma," Mr Ravi said.

The Governor said, "Some people are distorting the ideas and beliefs around Satanana by making all sorts of negative remarks. They are doing so out of their selfish interests. They disregard the value of Sanatan. However, Sanatana is indestructible."

"We have to be awake and alert to our responsibilities. If anyone speaks about eradicating it (Sanatana) or causing it any harm, we must realise that they are peddling an agenda to break the country," Governor Ravi said.

Stressing that the "core strength" of Bharat lies in Sanatana, he claimed that "anti-national elements were attempting to strike at the very core of the country".

"That is what the Britishers did, or tried to do. They succeeded in breaking Bharat as Partition saw the country being splintered into two," the Tamil Nadu Governor said, adding, "Bharat cannot afford another partition".

Invoking Ambedkar, he said, "Our Constitution says, 'India that is Bharat'. Bharat is a product of Sanatana Dharma. Unfortunately, after the Britishers left, we didn't do much to make the citizens understand what Bharat is."
