"Canada Jeopardised Good Ties": Shashi Tharoor On Diplomatic Row

Reacting to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegation of Indian involvement in the killing of a Sikh separatist leader on its soil, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that it was unfortunate that Mr Trudeau made such a statement in the Parliament and that Canada "jeopardised" the state of a very good relationship.

"We are seeing a tit-for-tat on both sides. First, on the expulsion of a diplomat and then on this advisory...I think it is unfortunate that Canada chose such a public route. If at all they have any issue, these matters should be discussed privately with a friendly govt like India and the matter should be discussed behind closed doors. Going public, making a statement in the Parliament was very unfortunate by the Prime Minister (Justin Trudeau) and having gone that far they (Canada) have really jeopardised the state of a very good relationship," Mr Tharoor told ANI.

Earlier in the day, BJP National Vice President Baijayant Jay Panda reacted to the issue and said that although Canada has been professing liberal values, they have been supporting terrorists on their soil.

"Canada has been professing all these liberal values like freedom of speech but they have been appeasing, patronising and supporting terrorists on their soil. And these terrorists are not just targeting India they have killed hundreds of Canadian citizens themselves," Mr Panda told ANI.

Hitting out at the Canadian government, Mr Panda said that the government of Canada does not allow a referendum for Quebec separatists but has no problem with Khalistani separatists who not only hold the referendum but also celebrate the acts of violence.

"Canada itself has separatist movements such as the Quebec Separatist movement. They don't allow the same freedom to those who want to have independence for Quebec. They don't allow a referendum for Quebec separatists. And yet they have no problem allowing Khalistani separatists and terrorists to not only have to try to have this referendum on Canadian soil but also to celebrate the acts of violence...This is not acceptable, It's not civilized," he said.

The BJP National Vice President also took a dig at the Canadian government and said that the Indian government must consider facilitating an online "referendum on the Quebec independence" issue just like they allow Khalistani separatists to try the same on Canadian soil.

"In the spirit of friendship with Canada, we in India must consider facilitating an online referendum on the Quebec independence issue (in gratitude for their allowing Khalistani separatists to try the same on Canadian soil). Perhaps we should also offer Indian soil for the Quebec independence movement's events commemorating their sacrifices, bombings and assassination attempts (again, just like Canada has been so considerate to allow for the Khalistanis)," Mr Panda posted on 'X'.

"This would also embellish the spirit of free speech so cherished in both our nations and would help clarify the increasing support for an independent Quebec (as reported in media earlier this year). Finally, since elected Canadian politicians who support Quebec independence have been travelling and meeting European leaders, we should also meet and understand their views. In the spirit of Indo-Canadian friendship and cooperation, I would be glad to host an interaction for them here in Delhi," he added.

This comes amid tensions in India-Canada relations after Canadian PM Justin Trudeau made allegations regarding the Indian government's involvement in the fatal shooting of Khalistan Tiger Force chief Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.

The allegations were denied by the Ministry of External Affairs in India which dubbed the allegations as 'absurd' and 'motivated'.

Several world leaders have also expressed 'deep concerns' over Trudeau's remarks in the Canadian Parliament.

Actors, Artistes Visit New Parliament Building, Hail PM Modi On Quota Bill

Several women sportspersons and artistes from the fields of cinema, fashion, dance and music visited the new Parliament building Tuesday and hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government's move to introduce the women's reservation bill.

The bill that seeks to provide 33 percent reservation for women in Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies was introduced in Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

Some women achievers were also among the special invitees on the occasion of the introduction of the 'Narishakti Vandan Adhiniyam', as the bill is officially called.

Prominent among them included actors Kangana Ranaut and Esha Gupta, fashion designer Rina Dhaka, singer-dancer Sapna Chaudhary, Padma Shree awardee dancers Nalini and Kamlini and vocalist Padma Shree Sumitra Guha.

Ms Ranaut termed the day historic for the nation and for the women of the country and thanked PM Modi for opening up new avenues for women. "The BJP could have brought any other bill today, but they chose women empowerment. This shows their thinking. I think the country is in able hands," she said.

"The government could have discussed any other issue or passed any other bill in Parliament, but they chose to prioritise women's empowerment. I believe this is a very big statement," the actor said, hailing the leadership of prime minister Modi.

"We also see women in more active roles like army and the air force. In fact, in my upcoming film, Tejas, I am playing an air force pilot. So I think this is a new age that we are getting into," she said.

Esha Gupta said, "It is a very progressive thought. This reservation bill will give equal powers to women and it is a big step for our country. PM Modi promised it and delivered it." "The bill being tabled on the first day of the new Parliament highlights the commitment to progress. It's crucial to listen to the voices of women. This bill will empower women, and PM Modi has been advocating various initiatives for women, including 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao'," she said.

Fashion designer Rina Dhaka said, "It is a big victory for the women of the country. There was very marginal representation of women although they formed an equal part of our country and society." She thanked Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Anurag Thakur for inviting women achievers to Parliament to witness the introduction of the Bill.

Thakur later termed the introduction of the bill a revolutionary step. "Prime Minister Modi has brought this bill and we will ensure it is passed in Parliament. This is the extension of various steps taken by the Government towards women empowerment during the Amrit Kaal".

Wrestler Geetika Jakhar said it is an occasion to feel happy about. "We have witnessed the occasion when this bill was introduced." Actor Sulakhyana Barua said she feels proud to be an Indian. "Women will get strength through this bill," she said, adding there is diversity in the country.

Arjuna Award winner Neha Rathi said it is a matter of happiness and "now more women will come into politics and women will occupy all positions".

Alka Tomar, also an Arjuna Awardee, said this bill brings a big opportunity for women.

Other prominent personalities who visited the new Parliament building included Sandhya Pasricha, writer and Bharatanatyam performer Nandini Ramani, Amber Zaidi, Kuchipudi dancer Vinashreedidi Rao and Padmashri Ranjana Gauhar, an Odissi dancer and Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee.

Delhi High Court Orders 24 To Clean Police Stations For Quashing FIRs

The Delhi High Court has directed 24 people to do "basic cleaning work" for three days at four police stations here while agreeing to quash a criminal case against them.

Justice Saurabh Banerjee asked the 24 individuals to divide themselves into four groups of six people each to clean Mehrauli, Fatehpur Beri, Maidan Garhi, and Neb Sarai police stations.

Two FIRs were registered at Mehrauli police station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including for voluntarily causing hurt, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and rioting following a scuffle between neighbours.

The high court agreed to quash the FIRs after noting that the parties have voluntarily settled their disputes and do not wish to pursue the criminal proceedings further.

"In view of the fact that a settlement has been reached between the parties and as the respondents do not wish to continue with the criminal proceedings, in order to bring a quietus to the present disputes, this court is of the opinion that continuation of the aforesaid FIR will be an exercise in futility," the judge said.

The high court quashed the FIRs with "directions to all the named 24 parties involved herein, consisting of... that all of them would divide themselves into 4 groups of 6 persons each who would undertake basic cleaning work for 3 days, that is, on Monday, Thursday, and Sunday of the week commencing from September 18 at the below-mentioned 4 police stations, namely Mehrauli, Fatehpur Beri, Maidan Garhi, and Neb Sarai, to the satisfaction of the investigating officer concerned".

These 24 people shall be at liberty to decide amongst themselves as to the composition of each group of 6 persons and also the police station where each group shall undertake the basic cleaning duty, it said.

5% Medical Seats For Students Of State-Run Schools: Shivraj Chouhan

Madhya Pradesh will keep 5 per cent seats in medical studies for students of government schools starting this year, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Monday.

Ever since admissions to medical colleges started through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), students of government schools were not able to become doctors, he said.

"For the first time in the country, the Madhya Pradesh government has taken a decision to be implemented from this year under which five per cent reservation will be given to students from government schools in medical studies. Only government school students will be admitted on these seats," he said.

"Students of private schools used to clear NEET till now. But two lists will be prepared from now - one for government school students and the other for those from private schools," he added.

Children from poor backgrounds must also get a chance to move ahead, Mr Chouhan asserted.
