S Jaishankar Raises Issue Of Indian Diplomats' Security In UK

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday brought up concerns pertaining to the security of Indian diplomats in the UK with his British counterpart James Cleverly amidst extremist elements threatening officers of India's missions in the country.

Mr Jaishankar raised the issue with Mr Cleverly days after National Security Advisor Ajit Doval called upon his British counterpart Tim Barrow to take strong public action such as deportation against extremist elements threatening officers of the Indian High Commission in the UK.

Taking to Twitter, Mr Jaishankar, who is here in the Indonesian capital to attend a meeting of the ASEAN-India Foreign Ministers, said he had "a broad-ranging discussion" with UK Foreign Secretary Cleverly.

The minister said they spoke about the agenda of the ASEAN Regional Forum, including regional and global issues, and jointly assessed the progress of the India-UK bilateral exchanges.

Mr Jaishankar said during the discussion, he "brought up concerns pertaining to the security of our diplomats" in the UK.

Recently, pro-Khalistan groups have issued posters inciting violence against senior Indian diplomats in the UK as well as in the US, Canada and Australia, triggering concerns in New Delhi.

India has already asked all these countries to ensure the safety and security of Indian diplomats and its missions.

Mr Cleverly on Thursday last week said that any direct attacks on the High Commission of India in London are "completely unacceptable".

Mr Jaishankar's intervention follows threats and attacks targeted at Indian diplomatic missions in the US, Australia and Canada and some threatening posters emerging online with images of Indian High Commissioner to the UK Vikram Doraiswami and Dr Shashank Vikram, the Consul General of India in Birmingham.

In March, the tricolour flying atop the Indian High Commission in London was grabbed at by the protesters chanting pro-Khalistan slogans. Following the incident on March 19, India registered a strong protest with the British government over the safety of its diplomatic mission and questioned the lack of sufficient security at the premises.

Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs has said that the safety of the Indian diplomats and security of the Indian missions is of utmost priority to the government and New Delhi has taken it up with concerned countries.

In the name of freedom of expression, space should not be given to those advocating violence or legitimising terrorism, Bagchi said in a message to the countries that are witnessing increasing activities by the Khalistani groups.

Delhi BJP Removes Spokesperson, She Alleges "Chauvinism"

The BJP's Delhi unit on Wednesday removed Neha Shalini Dua as its spokesperson for allegedly violating the official party line while expressing her views on various issues, including GST.

Hitting back, Dua charged a section of the BJP's Delhi unit leaders with "chauvinism" and urged the party's central leadership to take note of the action against her.

"Delhi BJP has with immediate effect relieved Neha Shalini Dua from the post of spokesperson of Delhi BJP for repeatedly violating (the) party line," a statement from the Delhi BJP's media department said.

The statement also added that "all media channels and newspapers are informed that Neha Shalini Dua's views should not be taken as (the) party line".

The news channels have been requested to not invite Ms Dua as the Delhi BJP spokesperson, it said.

Earlier this month, the Delhi BJP issued Ms Dua a showcause notice to explain her violation of the party line.

"Earlier also you violated the party line. Even today you uploaded a video on GST, which is not the official stand of the party," said a letter to Ms Dua by Harsh Malhotra, the Delhi BJP general secretary, on Wednesday.

The letter added that according to the order of the Delhi BJP president, Ms Dua is being immediately relieved from the post of spokesperson of the BJP's Delhi unit but she can continue as a party worker.

Ms Dua said on Twitter that some men in the party thought they could stop her from speaking, which was their fault.

In another tweet, she said that four notices were sent to her in the last two years, revealing a "cheap chauvinist" mindset, and urged the BJP's central leadership to take cognisance of the action against her.

She also uploaded a video on her Twitter handle in which she defended her views on the GST, saying it was not in violation of the party line.

Court Orders Magisterial Probe In 2022 Public Flogging Incident In Gujarat

The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday ordered an inquiry by the chief judicial magistrate (CJM) of Kheda district into a 2022 incident where some members of the Muslim community, arrested for stone-pelting, were allegedly flogged by the police.

A division bench of Justices A S Supehia and M R Mengdey was hearing an application filed by some of the men who were flogged by police after they were arrested for allegedly pelting stones at a garba event at Undhela village in October 2022.

The application, seeking action for 'contempt of court' against the policemen, cannot be rejected without verification of facts, the judges said.

The bench directed the registrar general of the high court to send a pen drive containing video and photographs of the alleged incident to the CJM Kheda.

The chief judicial magistrate shall verify the contents and prepare a comprehensive report within three weeks after an inquiry, identifying the role of each of the accused (police personnel), the HC said.

The CJM shall forward the report to the high court, the judges said, adjourning the hearing to August 8.

During the Navratri festival in October 2022, some villagers as well as policemen were injured after a mob of members of the Muslim community allegedly hurled stones at a 'garba' (traditional dance) event at Undhela village.

Subsequently, videos purportedly showing police personnel publicly flogging three of the 13 men arrested for stone-pelting went viral on social media.

Some of the accused approached the HC, claiming that the police personnel involved in the act committed a contempt of court by flouting the Supreme Court's directions.

The HC noted that the petitioners relied on video and photographs in support of their case, and even a report submitted by the Inspector General of Police referred to the video when he named six of the 13 policemen who were allegedly found present during the incident.

The IG's report revealed prima facie (on the face of it) complicity of six respondents, but it was silent about the others and the individual role of each of the respondents, the court noted.

The petitioners also did not attribute specific roles to individual respondents, it said.

The court, therefore, finds it appropriate to call for "an appropriate report holding an inquiry so that the exact complicity of each of the respondents is verified and the verification of the photographs (and videos) are done," the high court said in the order.

The provisions of the Evidence Act do not apply strictly to the proceedings under the Contempt of Courts Act, and the court has only to verify the allegations made by the complainant, it said.

To verify the contents of the video as well as complicity of each of the respondents, "we deem it appropriate to direct the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Kheda to verify the contents of the pen drive as well as photos placed on record in the petition," the HC said.

India Always First To Respond During Emergency, Says Maldives Minister

Maldives Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid on Wednesday said that Maldives has an outstanding relationship with India and every time, Maldives had an emergency, India has always been the first to respond.

"We have confidence in India that every time the Maldives has to dial international 911 in an emergency, India has always responded- 1988, the mercenary attack in the Maldives undermining our sovereignty, the 2004 tsunami, the 2015 water crisis in Mali, and the most recent COVID-19 pandemic," the Foreign Minister of Maldives told ANI about how India has been helpful to the Maldives in the past and in recent times.

Abdullah Shahid said that India has earned a lot of respect and love from the countries of the world, including Maldives when it reached out during the COVID-19 pandemic with the Indian vaccine.

"I have travelled to many parts of the world. From everywhere I travelled, I heard the gratitude of those countries which India reached out to during the COVID pandemic with the Indian vaccine. And this kind of sharing has created a lot of respect, a lot of love for India around the world. And so is it in the Maldives," the Foreign Minister of Maldives said.

He further said that Maldives is encouraged by the policy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the SAGAR policy, and the neighbourhood first policy. The outstanding relationship between India and Maldives has enormously flourished.

"No doubt that President Solih has this India-first policy in his foreign policy. And we are encouraged by the policy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the SAGAR policy, and the neighbourhood first policy. So this outstanding relationship has enormously flourished," he said while speaking to ANI.

On asking how he looked at the analogy that Maldives is always seen as a place where India and China are always competing and when people compare the two countries and the fight for influence, Maldives' Foreign Minister said that President Solih has India-first policy in his foreign policy.

Referring to China, he said that Maldives is not a battleground for anyone.

"Maldives is not a battleground for anyone. Maldives is a ground for everyone to come together," Abdullah Shahid said.

"We are friend to all and enemy to none. However, we have the geographic reality of India as our largest next-door neighbour. We are very happy that we have had an outstanding relationship with India," he added.

Speaking on India's G20 presidency, Shahid on Wednesday said that the G20 leadership of India should be admired for the simple reason that India did not restrict G20 activities to G20 alone. Prime Minister Narendra Modi picked the theme of sharing with everyone.

"G20 leadership of India should be admired for the simple reason that the Prime Minister has picked the theme of sharing with everyone. It's not about G20, but also sharing. The theme he (PM Modi) has taken for G20 is how the rest of the world takes comfort in India's Chairmanship of G20," Shahid said while speaking to ANI.

"India has the largest population in the world and it is a country full of talent being respected around the world. Even as chair of G20, India has not restricted the G20 activities to G20 alone. It has reached out to countries all around, large and small countries. So India has this habit of sharing its development, its wealth, and its knowledge," he added.

Prime Minister Modi has stated multiple times that India's G20 Presidency is guided by the principle of 'One Earth, One Family, One Future' and in line with ''Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam." PM Modi has stated that India's G20 Presidency has worked to "further global good and create a better planet."
