Maharashtra's Toy Train Not To Run During Monsoon

The Neral-Matheran narrow gauge 'toy train' will remain suspended between June 10 to October 15 for safety reasons, the Central Railway said on Tuesday.

The train services are stopped during monsoon every year for fear of landslides or stone fall.

The CR's announcement, notably, came three days after the train derailed while on the way down to Neral though no passenger suffered injuries.

Shuttle services between Matheran and Aman Lodge, the station close to Dasturi point beyond which vehicles are not allowed, will remain operational during the monsoon, the CR release said.

Six pairs of regular passenger services and one 'material special' service will be operated daily from Monday to Friday between Matheran and Aman Lodge stations, it added.

Two additional special shuttle services will be operated on weekends.

On June 3, one of the wheels of the engine derailed near Jumma Patti station, located some 95 km from Mumbai, around 5.30 pm while the train was heading to Neral from Matheran, a CR spokesperson said.

The incident took place a day after the horrific triple train crash in Odisha in which 278 people died.

The toy train, which had left Matheran around 4 pm, had 90 to 95 passengers onboard, but no passenger suffered any injury due to the engine derailment, the spokesperson said.

The train was re-railed around 9 pm and was brought back to Neral station, located at the foot of Matheran hills, by 10.30 pm.

The incident led to the cancellation of the last train from Neral to Matheran.

The toy train moves at a slow speed, and sometimes, in the case of derailment, the support staff manually lift and put a derailed coach back on the tracks.

The Neral-Matheran train route, among the few mountain railways in India, is more than 100 years old.

The 21-km narrow gauge track passes through a picturesque valley overlooked by the hill station of Matheran.

Request To End Month-Long Manipur Internet Ban Filed In Supreme Court

A fresh petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against the suspension of internet services in the violence-hit state of Manipur since May 3.

The petition filed by advocate Chongtham Victor Singh and businessman Mayengbam James in the Supreme Court said their lives and livelihood have been severely affected by the statewide internet shutdown.

Chongtham Victor Singh told ANI that there has been a complete blockade of internet access across the state for almost a month and it's causing significant harm to people's day-to-day lives and their fundamental rights.

The ban on the internet was imposed on May 3 and remains in effect till now.

There is no stipulated public order on the internet ban and did not go through the oversight of the Review Committee which is necessary under Law, he said.

The plea said that the order of the internet ban is strangulating the Freedom of Speech and Expression and the Freedom to carry on trade and occupation. The plea also stated that there is a violation of Rule 2(2) of the Telecom Suspension Rules and hence they are unconstitutional.

The petitioners sought a restoration of the internet in Manipur, except for those in which there continues to be unrest and violence.

The top court is already hearing the cases relating to the violence in Manipur and during the last hearing, it sought a status report from the Centre and State on the relief and rehabilitation efforts for the people affected in the violence between Meitei and Kuki communities.

Earlier, the top court expressed concern over the loss of lives and properties in Manipur during the violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities and stressed taking adequate measures to restore normalcy there.

On March 27, the High Court directed the State to consider the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes list.

The violence in Manipur between the Hindu Meiteis and the tribal Kuki, who are Christians, erupted after a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3.

Violence has gripped the entire State for now a month and the Central government had to deploy paramilitary forces to bring the situation under control.

Rahul Gandhi Running "Nafrat Ka Mega Shopping Mall": BJP Chief's Charge

BJP chief JP Nadda on Monday lashed out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's "Mohabbat ki Dukaan" (shop of love) outreach in his ongoing tour to the US, claiming the Congress leader was actually running a "Nafrat (hatred) ka mega shopping mall" by pronouncing divisions in the country that don't exist.

Speaking at the launch of the book 'Amrit Kaal Ki Ore' written and edited by Shivanand Dwivedi and KK Upadhyay, Mr Nadda claimed that Rahul Gandhi has questioned India's vaccines, surgical strikes and stood in support of those who wanted to divide the country. He said even US President Joe Biden told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he wants his autograph and told him about the overwhelming number of requests he has received to be part of his event.

The BJP chief said that when the world only saw a financial crisis during Covid-19 and Russia-Ukraine war, India managed to stay on its feet. "The growth rate forecast for the US is 1.4%, China 5.2%, but the forecast for India is at 6.1%. Morgan Stanley shows it could touch 7.2%. Rahul Gandhi should know the country he has gone to has a growth of just 1.4% while India could be at 7.2%."

Mr Gandhi is on a week-long tour to Washington DC, New York and San Francisco, and everywhere he has been talking about the BJP government, accusing it of dividing people on the basis of religion. He has blamed the BJP and RSS for centralising all resource allocation, and for alienating the Dalits and Muslims, also questioning the foreign policy and safety of Indians.

Mr Nadda however said the PM's policies have helped in the de-hyphenation between India and Pakistan. "Earlier, every global leader would talk about these two countries in the same breath. Now, no more. Today the country is safe and united," Mr Nadda said, adding PM Modi's governance has taken the country from vote bank politics to report card politics, from dynasty to democracy and meritocracy.

The book has prominent authors such as Ila Patnaik, Anant Vijay and Anirban Ganguly on the impact of PM Narendra Modi's governance on different aspects of life.

"Things In India Moving Well": Namibia's Cheetah Conservation Fund

India's cheetah project is progressing well beyond the initial projections made before the animals were translocated, said Namibia-based Cheetah Conservation Fund which is helping the Indian government reintroduce the animals in the country.

It has, however, cautioned the Indian authorities of more challenges as the remaining cheetahs are released into unfenced areas of the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh.

The Cheetah Conservation Fund's (CCF) update on the cheetah project comes amid concerns over the health and well-being of the translocated cheetahs, the carrying capacity of the Kuno National Park, and the availability of secondary sites for the spotted felines in the country.

"It's too early to label Project Cheetah a success. But, so far, the cheetahs have shown every ability to survive in India. There's a long road ahead and there will be more setbacks, but from the perspective of the longest-running cheetah conservation project in Africa, the CCF considers things in India are moving well," it said.

In a tweet on Monday, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said, "With its 33-year-old history of working with cheetahs in the wild, Cheetah Conservation Fund, Namibia, remains optimistic about Project Cheetah's long-term success in India. CCF says Project Cheetah is on the right track." With three adult cheetahs and as many cubs dying at Kuno in three months, Yadav had last week said, "We take responsibility for whatever happened", but asserted that the translocation project will be a major success.

Three adult cheetahs — one from Namibia and two from South Africa — have died within the holding enclosures at Kuno since March. Additionally, three cubs born to a female Namibian cheetah succumbed to severe dehydration and malnutrition during a recent heatwave in Madhya Pradesh, where temperatures soared to as high as 47 degrees Celsius.

The CCF said losses were factored into the project's first-year estimates "Furthermore, the birth of the first successful litter indicates that project cheetah is progressing well beyond initial projections made before the animals were translocated," it said.

"Looking forward, the team can expect to face additional challenges after more cheetahs are released into unfenced areas of the Kuno National Park. Leopard is a natural competitor of the cheetah. But in India, the density of leopards at Kuno is far greater than in African ecosystems which may lead to increased pressure on the cheetahs," the CCF said.

Additionally, Kuno has other large carnivores that are not known to cheetahs. These include wolves, sloth bears, dhole dogs and occasionally dispersing tigers that wander through from a nearby reserve. Any interactions between cheetahs and these species will be precedent-setting in modern times, it said.

About concerns raised by a group of German researchers about the cheetah-carrying capacity of Kuno, the CCF emphasised that precise determination is currently impossible until the cheetahs have firmly established their home ranges.

It noted that the cheetah project's field teams are building India's cheetah learning curve rather quickly. They are being exposed to a variety of veterinary issues and behaviours associated with free-ranging cheetahs.

"Because this is a long-term project, with each of these lessons learned, the chances for overall success increase," it said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the first batch of eight spotted felines from Namibia into a quarantine enclosure at Kuno in Madhya Pradesh on September 17 last year. In a second such translocation, 12 cheetahs were flown in from South Africa and released into Kuno on February 18.

Three cheetahs died in March and April. Of the 17 remaining adult cheetahs, seven have already been released into the wild.

A high-level steering committee recently set up by the Centre to oversee the project's progress has recommended releasing seven more cheetahs into the wild in three phases by the third week of June.
