Eight Congress turncoats who joined the BJP and helped it form the government in 2019, lost in the May 10 Karnataka Assembly elections, for which the results were announced on Saturday. As many as 13 Congress and three JD(S) MLAs had resigned from the Karnataka Assembly in 2019 thus bringing down the 14-month-old coalition government of the Congress and the JD(S) led by H D Kumaraswamy. Later, 16 of these MLAs, who were disqualified by the Speaker, joined the BJP and a majority them contested the 2019 Assembly bypolls, won the election and became Ministers in the B S Yediyurappa-led BJP government. JD(S) second-in-command and two-time chief minister HD Kumaraswamy won the Channapatna seat in Karnataka's Ramanagara district for the sixth time on Saturday. HD Kumaraswamy received 96,592 votes against 80,677 polled by his BJP rival CP Yogeshwar. Congress candidate Gangadhar S finished third with 15,374 votes, according to the Election Commission website. Mr Kumaraswamy had also contested elections from Channapatna, known for wooden toys, instead of Ramanagara in 2018 against local strongman Yogeshwara. The JD(S) leader won by a margin of 21,530 votes. Mr Yogeshwara has represented the constituency five times since 1999 as an Independent, and as a candidate of Congress, BJP and Samajwadi Party. Both Mr Yogeshwara and Mr Kumaraswamy belong to the dominant Vokkaliga community in the region. The Supreme Court Friday said the process of designating 'senior advocate', which has always been held as an "honour conferred", should be carried out at least once a year. A bench headed by Justice S K Kaul, while fine-tuning the guidelines for the supreme court and high courts for designating lawyers as senior advocates which were laid down by the top court in a 2017 verdict, said voting by secret ballot by the full court should not be the rule but an exception. It said in case it has to be resorted to, the reasons for the same should be recorded. Rajasthan minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas on Friday spoke out against the remarks by fellow Congress leader Shanti Kumar Dhariwal on dissident leader Sachin Pilot, saying one should "refrain" from making such comments. In an apparent attack on former deputy chief minister Pilot on Thursday, Dhariwal said, " Ashok Gehlot ne acche accho ko paani pilaaya hai (He has dealt with several big leaders)." Reacting to this statement, Khachariyawas urged all fellow Congress leaders to refrain from airing such views as they reflect poorly on the party and weaken it.
