Solution To Naga Political Issue At Final Stage: BJP Chief At Poll Rally

BJP president J P Nadda on Tuesday asserted that the solution to the Naga political issue is in the final stage as the Narendra Modi government is tirelessly working on it.

Addressing an election rally here, Nadda also said that the commitments given to Eastern Nagaland People's Organisation which was seeking a separate state will be fulfilled in letter and spirit.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi is eager to resolve the Naga political issue while Union Home Minister Amit Shah has tirelessly worked on it. It has come to the final stage," the BJP president said at the rally held in support of the candidates of the BJP and ally NDPP.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton and state BJP president Temjen Imna Along are witnesses that the Centre has taken lots of efforts to solve the decades-old issue, he said.

To find a solution to the decades-old problem, the Centre government has been holding separate negotiations with NSCN-IM since 1997 and the Working Committee of Naga National Political Group (NNPG), comprising at least seven groups, since 2017.

The Modi government inked a Framework Agreement with NSCN-IM in 2015 and Agreed Position with NNPGs in 2017. However, the final solution is yet to be attained with NSCN-IM remaining adamant on its demand for a separate flag and constitution for the Nagas.

On the separate statehood demand of Eastern Nagaland People's Organisation (ENPO), he said that they have been discussing the issue with the Union Home Minister and whatever commitment has been given will be followed in letter and spirit.

The ENPO, which has been demanding a separate state - Frontier Nagaland - comprising six districts of Mon, Tuensang, Longleng, Kiphire, Shamatore and Noklak, had given a poll boycott call to press for their demand. They, however, withdrew it earlier this month.

"We understand the national commitment but also understand the regional aspirations of the Nagas and we have to assimilate and go forward," he said.

Nadda said the BJP is committed to go forward for the next five years under the leadership of Rio, also the NDPP president, in the northeastern state.

The NDPP and the BJP are contesting the February 27 assembly election with a 40:20 seat-sharing arrangement.

Rio, who was also present at the rally, conveyed gratitude for the Centre's support to the Nagaland government and assuring a firm coalition between the NDPP and BJP.

"We have come to the last part of the first term which has been successful and provided a stable government giving out the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Northeast," he said.

However, Rio regretted that a solution to the Naga political issue is yet to be reached though MLAs of all parties came together.

"The 60 members of the assembly came together to run an opposition-less government to show our commitment that we want a solution. But, I hope if we continue to work with dedication and commitment, a solution will be achieved as the prime minister and the Union home minister have shown the commitment to the solution," he said.

'Centre Wants To Convert J&K Into Hindu-Majority State": Farooq Abdullah

Reacting to Home Minister Amit Shah's statement on the restoration of statehood in Jammu and Kashmir, JKNC MP Farooq Abdullah on Monday said that they (the government) will give a truncated statehood after elections.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir will come up after assembly polls and that a call on the timing of elections will be taken by the Election Commission.

"I had clearly stated that statehood will be restored in Jammu and Kashmir after elections. Process of preparation of voters' list is nearing completion in the UT. Now, the Election Commission has to take a call on elections," Shah, in an exclusive interview with ANI, released on Tuesday, said.

To which Jammu and Kashmir's former CM said that he thinks they (the government) don't want to give statehood. "They will give truncated statehood after elections," he added.

Abdullah also alleged that the motive behind the delimitation exercise, completed in UT, is to turn J-K into a Hindu majority state.

"They think that we are fools, but we are not. We know what their intention is, if this was not their intention, they would not have done delimitation as well, as the way they did. They want that it should be converted into a Hindu-majority state," he added.

Earlier, in an interview with ANI, Shah also said that Article 370 pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir, which was abrogated by the BJP-led government in 2019, had harmed the country.

He said the way development is taking place in Jammu and Kashmir, terrorism is gradually ending.

"See all the figures, there is a lot of change in Jammu and Kashmir," he said.

He went on to add that removing Article 370 has been on the agenda of BJP and Jan Sangh. He also referred India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the context of Article 370.

"Since 1950, it was on our agenda to remove Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. Today, the way Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing development and decrease in terrorism shows that changes that are coming," he said.

Shah said those slamming the BJP should answer in whose tenure terrorism grew in Jammu and Kashmir.

"As far as elections are concerned, do they not remember the local body polls, these were held under our rule, these did not take place for 70 years. Three families were holding sway in Jammu and Kashmir and they are making noise...Farooq Abdullah had gone to England. In whose tenure, terrorism grew, who allowed it to grow, there should be an answer," he said.

Man Cheated "Hundreds Of Doctors" Of Crores With Foreign Trip Bait: Cops

The Uttar Pradesh police on Tuesday said it has arrested a person who duped "hundreds of doctors" across several states to the tune of crores of rupees on the pretext of arranging foreign travel packages, officials said.

The accused, who identified himself as a medical representative of a leading pharmaceutical company, was arrested by the Noida unit of the Cyber Crime team from West Bengal, officials said.

Inspector Reeta Yadav, in-charge of the Noida cyber crime police station in Noida, said the case against Vishal Pandey (31) was lodged over a complaint by a Greater Noida-based doctor who claimed a fraud of Rs 18.72 lakh with him.

“Pandey worked with Glenmark Pharmaceuticals as an FSO in Raipur, Chhattisgarh but lost his job in 2017 after demonetisation. He has an MBA degree and graduated from the Banaras Hindu University. He is a native of Bardhman district in West Bengal,” Mr Yadav said.

“In June 2022, the Greater Noida-based doctor had lodged a complaint that Pandey had offered to arrange a family tour package to Dubai and taken Rs 18.72 lakh through bank account transfers and Paytm transfers fraudulently,” the inspector said.

Subsequently, investigation was taken up in the case and the accused was caught from his house in West Bengal, Mr Yadav, who led the arresting team, said.

Investigation also revealed that Pandey has duped hundreds of doctors using the same modus operandi and fraudulently made “crores of rupees”.

He has duped doctors in Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, West Bengal, among other states, the inspector said.

An FIR has been lodged against him under Indian Penal Code sections 419 (cheating by personation), 420 (cheating), 467, 468, 471 (all three related to forgery of documents), and under provisions of the Information Technology Act, she said.

12 South African Cheetahs To Land In India On Saturday

After months of delay, a dozen wild cheetahs from South Africa will finally arrive around 12 noon on Saturday in Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park (KNP), where eight such felines were brought from Namibia last year, a wildlife expert associated with India's cheetah revival project said on Monday.

These big cats - seven males and five females - will embark on journey to their new home thousands of miles away aboard an Indian Air Force (IAF) transport aircraft from the OR Tambo International Airport, Gauteng, South Africa on Friday evening, the project participant and expert told PTI.

He said the South African cheetahs will first arrive at the Gwalior Air Force base in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday morning and 30 minutes later they will be transported some 165km away to KNP in Sheopur district by IAF helicopters.

After landing at KNP around 12 noon, they will be put into quarantine bomas (enclosures) after half an hour (12.30 pm), added the expert.

KNP Director Uttam Sharma said they have set up 10 quarantine bomas for South African cheetahs. In two of these facilities, two pairs of cheetah brothers would be kept.

"We have completed our preparations to receive the big cats on Saturday," he added.

Experts said a delegation from South Africa visited KNP in early September last year to see arrangements at the wildlife sanctuary for housing the world's fastest land animals.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between India and South Africa last month for the translocation of the mammals last month.

South Africa has donated these big cats to India. But India has to pay USD 3,000 for the capture of every cheetah to the African nation before they are translocated, said the wildlife expert.

India had planned to airlift these South African cheetahs in August last year but couldn't do so due to delay in signing a formal translocation agreement between the two countries.

Due to the delay in the MoU signing for the inter-continental translocation of these big cats, some experts had in December expressed concern over the health of the South African cheetahs as these animals have been quarantined in their home country since July 15 in anticipation of their transfer to India.

As a result of long quarantine, these animals might have lost their fitness, they had said.

Prolonged quarantine could be taking a toll on the health of these felines, who are slated to join the eight cheetahs imported from Namibia and released into KNP in mid-September, the experts had said.

In fact, the 12 South African cheetahs earmarked for India have not hunted for themselves after being kept in bomas, wildlife experts in the know of India's cheetah reintroduction plan had said.

Three of them have been kept in Phinda quarantine boma in KwaZulu-Natal Province and nine in Rooiberg Quarantine boma in Limpopo Province, they said.

Seven of the cheetahs have lost fitness to a considerable extent as they have not hunted even once since July 15, one of the experts told PTI last month.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his 72nd birthday on September 17, had released eight cheetahs flown in from Namibia into KNP amid a lot of fanfare, setting the ball rolling for the revival of their population in India where these distinctively spotted cat species became extinct seven decades ago.

These fastest land animals from Namibia – five females and three males – are currently in hunting enclosures at the park before their full release into the wild.

In August, the SA cheetahs selected by Indian officials for translocation had completed one-month in quarantine, but they couldn't be airlifted to KNP in absence of approval from the South African government. Around Independence Day, the eight Namibian cheetahs had not completed their quarantine period so the Indian government could not bring them to KNP as well, the experts said.

As per Indian wildlife laws, a month-long quarantine is mandatory before importing animals and they are required to be kept in isolation for another 30 days after arrival in the country.

The experts said the spotted animals' metapopulation (cheetah count in small and medium parks) in South Africa has risen to 504 from 217 in 2011.

The last cheetah died in India in Koriya district of present-day Chhattisgarh in 1947 and the species was declared extinct in 1952.

Former Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh had initiated 'Project Cheetah' in 2009 under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government with an aim to reintroduce the wild cats in India.

No Trade With Pak, They Send Drugs To Punjab Every Day: Bhagwant Mann

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday disapproved the idea of resumption of trade with Pakistan, asking how it can be carried out with a nation that sends drugs and arms every day to his state through drones. The Chief Minister also took a swipe at BJP leader Sunil Jakhar over his tweet about supporting the "beleaguered neighbour".

Responding to a question on the resumption of trade ties with Pakistan, Mr Mann said, "How can we conduct trade with a country with which our relations are not good and which sends slow poison (narcotics) to kill our youth?"

Pakistan sends drugs and arms and ammunition to Punjab using drones every day, he told reporters. The Chief Minister also referred to the ongoing economic crisis in the neighbouring country.

"Sunil Jakhar has said help should be extended to Pakistan. He is from Abohar and he should send kinnow there (Pakistan)," Mr Mann said.

In a tweet on Monday, Mr Jakhar said, "As millions suffer food shortages, a virtually bankrupt Pakistan desperately needs help. A confident India should support a beleaguered neighbour-despite inimical designs of its deep state. Lets reciprocate the spirit of goodwill which made Kartarpur corridor possible."

Pakistan suspended trade with India in August 2019 after New Delhi revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
