Tripura Polls: 5 Points On 5-Time Congress MLA Sudip Roy Burman

The Congress has joined hands with the CPM-led Left Front for the 2023 Tripura Assembly election. The alliance is fighting against the BJP, which came into power after a historic win in 2018. Congress is contesting in 13 constituencies while the CPM has fielded candidates for 47 seats. Congress candidates include veteran leader Sudip Roy Burman.

Tripura goes to polls on February 16. The votes will be counted on March 2.

Here are 5 points about Sudip Roy Burman

  • Sudip Roy Burman is a former health and family welfare minister of Tripura and a five-time MLA who has never lost from the Agartala Assembly constituency since 1998. He won the seat again in the 2018 Assembly polls on a BJP ticket and was given the health portfolio. In May 2019, he was removed from the state cabinet.
  • The 56-year-old has been elected four times on a Congress ticket. In 2016, he left Congress to join Trinamool Congress. A year later, he switched over to BJP and retained his seat in the 2018 polls. Sudip Roy Burman quit BJP to join back Congress last year along with another rebel MLA Ashish Kumar Saha.
  • Sudip Roy Burman is the only Congress MLA among the three northeastern states – Tripura, Meghalaya, and Nagaland – that are going to polls this month.
  • The BJP import completed his graduation in mechanical engineering in 1989 from Calcutta University. He obtained an LLB degree in 1992 from Tripura University.
  • Congress has fielded Sudip Roy Burman from his bastion, Agartala, for the 2023 Tripura Assembly polls.

"Some Problem With Rajasthan": N Sitharaman On Ashok Gehlot's Budget Gaffe

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday took potshots at Congress and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot over his budget gaffe saying that last year's budget was read in the state assembly.

Nirmala Sitharaman, who replied to the debate on the Union Budget 2023-24, hit back at Congress over corruption allegations against the government, saying "clean your mouth with Dettol".

"There is some problem with Rajasthan, they're reading last year's budget this year. I pray to God that nobody should make such a mistake but today it happened and so I have to mention it," N Sitharaman said.

In a goof-up, Ashok Gehlot read parts from the previous budget at the beginning of his speech. BJP members protested in the Assembly leading to the adjournment. They asked if the budget had been leaked.

After the proceedings resumed, Mr Gehlot apologised for the error.

"I feel sorry, what happened was by mistake. You (Opposition) can point out only if there's a difference between what's written in the budget in my hand and its copies were given to the House members. If a page was added to my budget copy by mistake, how does the matter of leaking of budget arise?" he asked.

BJP leader Vasundhara Raje hit out at Gehlot. "It seems to have happened first in history. How can a person miss to cross-check such an important document?"

Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh also slammed the Rajasthan Chief Minister.

"Gehlot ji remains very careless, campaigned for this year's budget and started reading the old budget! The public was thinking of a light of relief in the darkness spread by misrule, here the Chief Minister's light went off. Don't know, laugh or cry!" he said.

"Will Demolish Domes Of New Telangana Secretariat": BJP State Chief

Telangana BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Friday said his party would demolish the domes of the state's new Secretariat building if it gets elected to power, and make changes to it to reflect the culture of Telangana along with that of the country.

Addressing a street corner meeting at Old Bowenpally here as part of 'Janam Gosa-BJP Bharosa' (people's suffering - BJP's assurance) campaign, he disapproved of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao inaugurating the new Secretariat on the latter's birthday on February 17.

The Secretariat building, named after Babasaheb Ambedkar by the BRS government, should be inaugurated on April 14, Ambedkar's birth anniversary, Kumar said.

The BRS government has increased the expenditure estimates to build the Secretariat from Rs 400 crore to Rs 1,500 crore, the Karimnagar Lok Sabha member alleged.

"With Rs 1,500 crore, he is building Secretariat like Taj Mahal. Once BJP government is formed, we will definitely demolish those domes. We will change the Secretariat in such a way that it reflects Telangana and Indian culture," he said.

Referring to AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi's reported reported comments that the new Secretariat has been built magnificently, like a Taj Mahal, he alleged that Mr Rao is trying to please Mr Owaisi and that Taj Mahal is actually a 'samadhi'.

He also said Pragati Bhavan, the Chief Minister's camp office-cum-official residence here, would be converted into a 'Praja Darbar'.

Alleging that AIMIM is not sincere about the welfare of minorities, he asked as to why youth from the old city of Hyderabad are not getting jobs.

The BJP leader slammed the ruling BRS for not implementing its election promises like making a Dalit leader as chief minister, providing financial support to unemployed youth and for alleged poor implementation of 'Dalit Bandhu' scheme among others.

The BJP, if elected to power in the state, would provide free education and health to poor, Mr Kumar added.

Meanwhile, the ruling BRS found fault with Mr Kumar's comments that the domes of the Secretariat would be demolished.

In an apparent reference to Mr Kumar's remarks, Telangana Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao said the opposition parties talked about demolitions and that they lacked a constructive approach.

Supreme Court Recommends 5 Names For Elevation As High Court Judges

The Supreme Court Collegium on Thursday recommended the names of five judges for elevation as Chief Justices of the High Court.

The Collegium recommended Justice Pritinker Diwaker to Allahabad High Court, Justice TS Sivagnanam to Calcutta High Court, Justice Ramesh Sinha to Chhattisgarh High Court, Justice Sonia G Gokani to Gujarat High Court and Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur to Manipur High Court.

The Collegium recommended Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur as Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. He is the brother of former Chief Justice of India TS Thakur.

Justice Thakur, whose parent High Court is the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, has been a judge of the Bombay High Court since June 10, 2022.

The Collegium's resolution said that the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court does not have representation amongst Chief Justices of High Courts since the retirement of Justice AM Margret.

It noted that over a long period of time, no judge from Jammu and Kashmir origin has been elevated as Chief Justice of a High Court or as a judge of the Supreme Court.

"Having regard to all relevant factors, the Collegium is of the considered view that Mr Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur is fit and suitable in all respects for being appointed as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur," it added.

It recommended the appointment of Justice Pritinker Diwaker as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and noted that the position of Chief Justice at the Allahabad High Court would be falling vacant once the Collegium's earlier recommendation to elevate incumbent Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal to the Supreme Court is cleared by the Central government.

The Collegium recommended the appointment of Justice TS Sivagnanam as the next Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

It also recommended the appointment of Justice Sonia G Gokani as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court. The recommendation was made in light of the fact that current Chief Justice Aravind Kumar was recommended for elevation to the Supreme Court last month.

The Collegium has recommended the name of Justice Ramesh Sinha, the seniormost puisne Judge from the High Court of Allahabad, as the Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court.
