Human Feces Found In Water Tank In Tamil Nadu, Probe Ordered

Taking note of the Vengavayil village incident where human feces were found dumped in a water tank supplying drinking water to a Dalit colony, Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) on Saturday ordered a CB-CID (Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department probe) into the incident.

"To intensify the probe and to identify and to arrest the accused soon the case on human excreta mixed in the water tank of SC residential area orders to transfer to CBCID," the DGP order copy said.

Last year in December, Human excrement was mixed in an overhead storage tank in Vengaivayal village in the area where the Arunthathiyar community lives.

Many children reportedly had vomiting and diarrhea after drinking this water.

Two-tumbler system (two-tumbler system: in places like teahouses where the upper classes drink from one tumbler and the other classes from another tumbler) is a practice in those areas.

Residents of Vengaivasal in Muttukadu panchayat in the Pudukkottai district later complained to the police after finding that human excreta was dumped into the overhead water tank that supplies water to the colony.

Following the incident, a petition was filed in the Madurai bench of the Madras High court seeking compensation for more than 30 families who drank the water.

The special Investigation Team is already probing the matter.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin earlier on Wednesday said that the incident shows that caste discrimination and untouchability exist in some pockets of society.

"The issue has exposed the prevalence of caste discrimination and untouchability in some pockets. Untouchability is saddening and condemnable. A new water tank and distribution pipeline were installed for the 32 houses. Affected people were given medical treatment and clean drinking water was supplied. Medical teams continue in the village," Mr Stalin said.

"So far 70 people have been inquired and the guilty will be brought to book with an iron hand," Chief Minister said while replying to a motion moved by the Opposition in the assembly.

AIADMK MLA Vijayabhakar demanded arresting those responsible for mixing human excreta in water tanks.

With Hip Replacement In 15 Minutes, Delhi Doctors Claim New World Record

Senior doctors at Fortis Escort Hospital in Delhi claimed to have created a world record regarding hip ball replacement surgery saying that it was completed in just 15 minutes 35 seconds.

The crucial surgery was performed on an 86-year-old woman last Friday and the surgery was completed by a team of doctors in just 15 minutes 35 seconds, the hospital authorities said.

Dr Kaushal Kant Mishra, Director of Orthopedic Sciences, performed this surgery breaking his own record. Earlier on February 11, 2021, Dr Mishra performed a similar surgery and completed it in 18 minutes and a few seconds.

"We had an 86-year-old patient who was admitted the day before yesterday night with a fracture. A few days later, she got an old cardiac problem and underwent angiography and angioplasty procedures," Dr Mishra told ANI.

"A stent was put in her heart around 18 years ago. When she came to us, we took the clearance from the cardiology side. Angiography was done again to check whether the heart was functioning properly or not. The results showed it was functioning only at 30 per cent," said Dr Mishra.

"We worked on her like robotic surgery and finished it as quickly as possible. And it was not to set a record, but our focus was on the need of the patient. We had to perform the surgery as quickly as possible because the patient was on dual integrated therapy and for angiography cardiologists give heparin which causes more bleeding during the surgery. But because the patient was in pain, and suffering for around four or five days, so we took the decision to go for surgery within an hour after the angiography. We performed the surgery in 15 minutes and 35 seconds and now the patient is out of danger," said Dr Mishra.

"I used to perform this kind of surgery in 20 to 25 minutes. The last record is also in my name, which was around 18 minutes and two seconds. But this time the whole team was ready and they've done it in accordance with the patient's condition and requirements," he said.

Dr Vijay Kumar, the director of intervention cardiology, added that the patient was given quite a lot of blood-thinning tablets.

"She went for the angiography, and it was done from one side and as there was a disease, but definitely it was not a life-threatening one, and could be fixed after the orthopaedic surgery. Many patients after surgery or during surgery, can get heart attacks and that was explained to the family," said Dr Vijay Kumar.

In this surgery, Dr Kaushal Kant Mishra along with his team and Dr Anuj from the anaesthesia department, Dr Vijay Kumar in the cardiologist team, and the nursing staff made this surgery successful, the hospital authorities said.

In its communication to the heads of these organisations and institutes, the NDMA said people associated with them should not interact with the media and share data on social media regarding the ground subsidence in Joshimath, where cracks have developed in buildings and other infrastructure.

Official sources said the purpose of the advisory is not to deny information to the media but to avoid confusion because so many institutions are involved in the process and they are giving their own interpretation of the situation.

The NDMA said it has observed that various government institutions are releasing data related to the subject on social media platforms and also they are interacting with the media with their own interpretation of the situation.

The statements on Joshimath are creating confusion not only among affected residents but also among citizens of the country, the NDMA said.

In a similar communication, the Uttarakhand government conveyed to the organisations that some of the institutions and agencies are publishing and uploading the information or reports about Joshimath without taking due permission from the competent authorities that is adversely impacting the ground situation as well as triggering panic among the community.

The Uttarakhand government said the ground subsidence around Joshimath has aggravated and the authorities are taking all necessary measures for the safety of habitation in the affected areas.

The state government has deployed team of experts from various scientific and technical institutions to assess the situation and providing the mitigation measures of the town.

The media is also propagating this blatantly, it said.

The communication said the organisations, before publishing or uploading any such reports or information, should obtain prior approval either from the respective central ministries or the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority.

The NDMA directive has gone to the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee, Geological Survey of India (GSI), National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of the ISRO, Hyderabad, Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), New Delhi, Surveyor General of India, Dehradun and Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun.

The communication has also been sent to the National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad, National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, National Institute of Disaster Management, New Delhi, Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority.

The Uttarakhand government sent the communication to the Geological Survey of India (GSI), Uttarakhand Space Application Centre, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, National Geophysical Research Institute, Central Building Research Institute, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of the ISRO and National Seismological Centre, Dehradun.
